This is one of the best books I have ever read. It tells the story surrounding the nomination, and eventually confirmation, of Thurgood Marshall to the US Supreme Court. It weaves the story of his nomination with other background material about the various players in the drama which makes for an interesting, and at times, tense book. It demonstrates both the best and worst of humanity, and as you read it, you can appreciate just how far we have come, but how far we have to go.As a person who is very interested in the Supreme Court, I have read many biographies and other accounts of the courts' inner workings. This one, however, was different, because of the significance of the event upon which it was based. The nomination of the court's first minority justice raised the ire of many a politician, including such well known people as the late Strom Thurmond. The book details the efforts of Thurmond and others to derail the nomination without anything but innuendo and insinuation. It also demonstrates just how horrible people can be when they want to. The actions of the senators that wanted to block this nomination were nothing short of abominable, as they were based upon nothing but Justice Marshall's race. As I read this book, I was astounded by the depth of the hatred those people had for this man (and others) just because of their race. Perhaps I have been naive but until this book I didn't realize just how pervasive the problem was back then.Even if you are not a fan of the Supreme Court, I urge you to read this book. It is a character drama in many ways and will provoke you to think about just how horribly the minority population was treated, and why a residual of that still exists today.
This is an outstanding book . It goes into detail about the process that landed Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court . Even though I have always enjoyed learning about the history of Justices and the Court , most of the background about Marshall’s acenstion to the court was completely new to me. The book also shows that the divisive and polarized fighting we see in Congress now pales in comparison to congress in the 60’s when many states still had Jim Crow laws and practices in place . Prejudice against Blacks was not only the rule of law in some states , it was defended on the Senate floor.The book also shows the significant contributions Marshall made to the civil rights movements BEFORE he was appointed to the Supreme Court.I found the account of the exchanges in the actual confirmation hearing riveting .It’s a must read for students of race relations in this country.
This was an interesting and informative book, but clearly written from a liberal bent. While overwhelming favorable to Marshall, his continued infidelity was at least mentioned. I found this balance appropriate for this type of book. Unfortunately, once past Marshall's death, the author devolved to the type of CNN-worthy mindless shaming that is unfortunately all too common. As an example, the author equated the Tea Party to the Dixiecrats in part of a continuing thread intended to saddle Republicans with the racist, segregationist legacy of the Democrats. It is too bad a capable editor couldn't have rescued a potentially important book. It is also too bad our children cant learn about a great American without some nitwit hijacking the story for their own purposes. Read until TM's death and then put it down.
I could not dismiss the first sentence: “The hunger for negro freedom began as soon as the first slave ships from West Africa and Brazil landed on America’s shores.†Really? Individuals that were captured by African kings, chained, and thrown into dungeons and then into ships hulls were happy until they landed in America?Yet I encourage people who have the time to consider the Marshall story that Haygood depicts as finally bitter for Linden Johnson's memories.When I was a newsboy in the mid-1950s, a father of three at the end of the week asked me to wait for three weeks yet still deliver the paper so he could read the Knoxville job opportunities and in the meantime feed his family. My dad cautioned me about the risk but never objected to the man's skin color. I am grateful that 1) the customer got a job and paid me and 2) for the fellow citizenship my dad expressed. I don't think I would have received the same example from Thurgood Marshall, based on Haygood's writing.
With the Kavanaugh hearings going on I was wondering what Thurgood Marshall went through. This book is so well written words fail me. A perfect full history of his life, his friends, his enemies in the U.S. Senate, and a worthwhile insight into President Lyndon B. Johnson as his champion. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Justice Marshall's life and the history surrounding his times. So powerful.
The book provides valuable insights how Marshall used the American constitution to fight segregation in the South and how he succeeded against all odds in many small law suits as well as the big one " Brown vs Board of Education " that ended legal school segregation in the South. It also describes his adversaries, mostly Southern Senators who fiercely opposed him. Against this background, the author describes the actual hearings in the Senate and Senator Ervin and others during the actual hearings. Fascinating, well written and very informative about our recent racist psast that may not be so past....
The man was incredible, and faced incredible challenges simply because of his race, and the prejudices of the men in power. It's long, but fascinating from start to finish, and leaves one enriched by the experience.
I really looked forward to reading this book. However I found that the author has !re three very basic errors in writing the book. I did not enjoy reading it, and while I had hoped to learn a great deal from it, I lost faith in it because I could not trust it. I would not recommend it for this reason.
