Caroline Fraser adds context beyond the much-discussed question of the true authorship of the books, placing the pioneer epic in the larger frame of conflicts between settlers and Indians, and North and South, then exploring the later role of the pioneer story in the politics and myth-making of the nation and the world. The reaction against Wilder's books that has led to her name being taken off at least one school named in her honor shocks the books' fans, but Fraser shows how Rose used the stories for her own political purposes, and the US promoted them as propaganda after World War II. Wilder herself slanted the books to bolster the image of the settlers as an ideal model for America. And yet, Fraser's affection for the books and their author shows through her admission of their myopic worldview, omissions, and outright fabrications. Her sympathies clearly lie with Laura rather than with Rose, and she provides evidence against later claims that Rose was the true author of the books.The surprises of the book for me are in the details of Rose's life and politics and how she leveraged Laura's books to further her Libertarian views, even beyond her death.My own grandmother was born in a log cabin in Wisconsin, and she married my grandfather, whose family homesteaded not far from Walnut Grove. Another grandfather was born in a sod house in Nebraska. My mother grew up in circumstances as difficult as much that Wilder described. When Wilder presents the pioneer story while minimizing or totally ignoring the plight of the displaced and murdered Native Americans, she is telling the tale as my family would have told it. Fraser expands the view to encompass what we must admit if we are honest: our success and wealth were built on the suffering of real people. These sections of Fraser's book aren't comfortable to read, but they are necessary to put the controversy about Wilder's books in context.Fraser doesn't hide her own political leanings, as she weaves her rejection of Ayn Rand's philosophy into the discussion of Rose's friendship with Rand and Rose's editing of Laura's later books to introduce Randian themes. I found that enlightening and interesting. Some people won't agree.Read this book if you are a fan of Wilder's books. If you know Wilder only from the TV series, read Wilder's books first. (I thoroughly enjoyed Fraser's take-down of the TV series, which I never saw but did read about.)I enjoyed Prairie Fire. It didn't make me dislike Wilder's books, or even have a lower opinion of Laura - - though it certainly didn't make me like Rose. I'm giving it four rather than five stars because of a little discomfort with how openly the author's biases, most of which I actually share, are expressed.

I have no argument with Fraser's research skills and that is why I gave her two stars rather than one. However, I find huge fault with the very premise of her research. How convenient for her to assail the Ingalls' family for their lack of "politically correct" sensibilities when it was our greatest American President, Abraham Lincoln who urged American settlers to go West with the Homestead Act. This book inspired the American Library Association to strip the name "Laura Ingalls Wilder" from its award, renaming it the Children's Literature Legacy Award. And why? Because of the "inconsistency between Wilder’s legacy and its core values of inclusiveness, integrity and respect, and responsiveness through an award that bears Wilder’s name." It is a little incongruous that any body would apply 21st century values to those of the 19th century, but worse than that, Laura clearly was the most inclusive of individuals who discussed her sadness over the lot of the American Indians. Whom next does Fraser wish to destroy? Would anyone like to do a deep dive on her? I hope so!

I am a Wilder fan, having visited her home twice, taught her books many times, and been quotingly familiar with them since the age of seven. Every time I read any of them to a child, I am still charmed by the truly mesmerizing prose. Whoever spun them, Laura or Rose, they are timeless and a joy. I have also read all their other published writings and assorted articles and biographies. I know the subject.This book is long, with nearly a hundred pages of small print endnotes, to boot. I devoured it all. It starts strong, giving an account of the Minnesota Massacre, alluded to in one book where Ma quickly turns the conversation to protect little ears--smart move, Ma Ingalls. This author gives us all the back stories and national context we as adult readers want and need. She does explore the push, pull, and tug between Laura and Rose.After all this valuable light brought to our subject, which is a rocky life covering nearly a century, one comes away, if anything, even more impressed by the resilience of Laura Ingalls. Someway, she did pen her stories into the very best "good parts version" of a life journey that was decidedly mixed. And she did it, in league with her daughter, beginning in later life, in a farmhouse, on Big Chief nickel tablets that are a handicap to write on, besides.For the real fans among us, and there are many, this book is a delight, even as our hearts are wrenched by the whole truth. One may not read it fast, but one will read it, and learn a lot of American history into the bargain.

I am surprised that this has not gotten more reviews. I have not found another book that is as thorough and in-depth about how Drupal 8 works. It goes over custom module development, as the title implies, but it also goes into depth about how the internals of Drupal 8 work as well. Many improvements have been made to the internals of Drupal 8, but it is difficult to know many of them unless you have a text like this to guide you. I liken this book to what Pro Drupal Development by John Van Dyke was for Drupal 6. Reading through Van Dyke's book was what gave me the ability to actually create custom Drupal 6 modules. This book is doing that for me for Drupal 8. The only criticism that I would have is that it would be nice to have more details about how to use the Drupal console to create custom modules and plugins. That may be too much of a moving target, but in practical terms just getting the basic modules and plugins to be generated with Drupal console can be a confidence boost and provide some understanding from the immediate feedback of the basic custom code.I highly recommend this book if you really want to understand what is going in with Drupal 8 and/or intend to do any custom programming.

Excellent is an understatement. This book is allowing me to get up to speed on Drupal 8 development at least 10X faster than if I had to sort through all the Drupal 8 documentation on my own. The book is my train into a big Drupal territory. If you need to develop in version 8 and you need to get fast track information on how to do it well, fast, this is the book for you. The book vastly flattens out the early part of Drupal 8's learning curve for those without a lot of experience with it. I would buy it again for sure.

Great content. Exactly what I was looking for. HORRIBLY EDITED! I've found the occasional annoying typo, like the word latter instead of ladder. But then there are code typos. The kind that cause you to take 3 hours to debug a 30 minute exercise. I'm 34 pages in and rather frustrated. Next time please find an editor that will review your grammar and beta test your code.

About the Author

Andrés Neuman was born in 1977 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and grew up in Spain. He was selected as one of Granta's Best of Young Spanish-Language Novelists and was elected to the Bogotá39 list. Traveler of the Century (FSG, 2012) was the winner of the Alfaguara Prize and the National Critics Prize, Spain's two most prestigious literary awards, as well as of a special commendation from the jury of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. Neuman has taught Latin American literature at the University of Granada. Jeffrey Lawrence received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Princeton University and is currently a professor of English at Rutgers University.

I was prepared to not like this book at all, after all it has no real plot and is written in short musings while the author is on an extended book tour in places I have never been. I was hooked by page 25. At first, I don't notice the hotel descriptions. By the end, I wish they were all collected together in an excel sheet so I could scroll through them and laugh. I also love how he describes public transport (or the lack of it), taxi driving and transport in general. And in at least one place, the streets have no names or numbers so it is essential to tell the story of where you live.If you like ironic comparisons of customs forms, book stores and local poets, this book is for you.

Unlike any other travel diary. Made me feel like I was thinking these thoughts, rather than reading them. Would love to read more by this author. He has an exceptional style.

I should title this review How to Read About Latin America Without Knowing Anything About Latin America. That's what I did. I loved the idea behind this book. Neuman traveled around Latin America, visiting nineteen countries after winning an important book award, and wrote down quick impressions in every country he visited. I must admit I didn't know any of the politicians he mentions and I only vaguely had heard of a couple of the authors he writes about. It doesn't matter. The book was fresh and fun and clever.

This is an extremely thought-provoking book that demonstrates Neuman's writing capabilities. I've loved all of his fiction published in English, and "How to Travel" is another step in his rise to be one of the most important writers in contemporary world literature.

i wanted to like this a lot more. i'm interested in travel, latin america, and lit. i've been to half a dozen of the countries he mentioned. and yet... this book bored me. i get the idea, but the rambling and random nature of his little observational paragraphs got really old after a couple chapters. and there are 19 chapters i believe... i read this in one sitting which might be part of the problem. also there was way too much discussion of contemporary authors local to each country, most of it too superficial to provoke any interest.

I saw some reviews saying this book was for the religious folks because it had a negative attitude towards sex...hmmm can't say that's 100% accurate. I am a Christian and I thought this book was pretty open about a lot of topics it didn't seem like it tried to put the fear in anyone, it was honest information. I actually still felt a little awkward reading some of the stuff in here knowing that I would be handing over the book to my 12,14,&15 year old teens. And no I am not overly conservative I am an open minded person and I like facts and honesty and I felt the book delivered. It's a decent book, I feel it has the info that a teen would need. Now a teen/young adult that is actually sexually active and feels he/she is more mature than their actual age might feel he/she might want another book that actually talks about sex positions..etc etc... But like I said this book covers pretty much every sexual topic. Great book to start "the talk" with my children. The reason why it's not getting 5 stars from me is because some info (answers)were 2-3 sentences long I would have preferred a little more info on some of the topics. I mean it is a book for teens,and they have tons of questions and want lots of answers.

I've gone through a few books on this topic and this is the best I've found so far. It is factual and leave out a bunch of editorial or lecture that teens don't want to hear.My son was horrified every time I tried to have "the talk." So I gave him this book told him to read a chapter and then I would quiz him. If we seemed to know the material we would not have to discuss it further and he could move to another chapter/topic. It really helped open the dialog between us. Pretty soon he felt totally comfortable discussing all kinds of things with me.Pretty good right? I stole the idea from Rosie O'Donnell who came up with this when her oldest would not talk to her about sex. I've recommended this technique and this book to several of my friends with teenagers. Makes it much more comfortable for both teens and adults.

I think this is a pretty solid book for the young adult. I read it over and was pretty happy with the info it presented.

While I don't agree with the author's opinions on everything, it has more factual information in it than most books.It makes a good supplementary book for health class, especially if you homeschool.I would recommend discussing the book with your teenager. Controversial subjects are covered, so you should probably add your own input after getting your teenager's opinion of the material.Good book, but needs parental guidance.

This book is a really good resource. It is very informative for my 14 year old son. Highly recommended.

I have been a patient fan of pretty little liars for almost five years now. I have seen almost every episode twice and I have read all the books. One thing I have been searching for was a companion to the tv series. A book with extras, the whole shabang. Usually whenever I purchase a companion to a series (book or tv) I devour it in one setting. Alas, this book didn't quite make the cut for that.This book would be great for the fan who has just started the show and isn't on season five.Personally I liked the info about the actors. This book gave very detailed descriptions of their previous acting experience a and allowed me to see their connection with the character (sorry, that was cheesy. I am an actress so I can't help it😁). I also really appreciated the extras at the end of the episode summary s. The author did do a great job high lighting certain parts.Though I have to say I was unhappy with the fact that this was only for two of the seasons. It says right there on the book to watch an episode along with reading the summary. I really agree with this.Some of the extras didn't refur to A. This is companion to a tv show about A. If you writing extras there should be significant clues mentions in the text. There went and I was quite disappointed with that.All together I would rate this a three because while I didn't hate it I dint love it. You should buy this book if you A) are on season one or two B) are going to watch season one or two again or C) want to have everything that has to do with pretty little liars. Even if it don't help at all.😄

A novel based off one of my favorite shows? Heck yes I'm going to read this. I loved getting to see behind the scene pictures and hear all of the girls talk about the show. It covers the fashion and secrets of the first two seasons (so if you haven't watched that far on the show don't read the book yet)! Any fan of Pretty Little Liars should read this book. It has tons of information, things you won't see or hear about on the show.

My young teen daughter insists that I watch PLL with her; it's our thing together. I actually enjoyed this book; it gave further insight and description of the episodes and was fun to read with my daughter. It was a launching point to talk about mature subjects seen on TV. In addition to everything said above, my daughter absolutely enjoyed reading it.

It explains a lot about the book and the show. It includes extras about different props (ex. the book To Kill A Mockingbird, it had a section about it!). It also had sections about the cast and characters. I love the "Slip Ups" in this book. They point out different mishaps in the show that happened and most people don't catch them (ex. Spencer was sent an e-mail from Melissa saying "lunch"... During this time they were not talking to each other.). It also includes pictures of the set and many more pictures of the actors. Overall, this is an amazing book, and I hope they come out with one for the next seasons! Get it!

Leslie Franks has done a masterful job of organizing and presenting Master Jeffrey Yuen's view point of Chinese energetics - this is the book I have been wanting for at least ten years! Franks sums up nicely much precious information which I have spent 15 years in gathering - from recordings, transcripts of talks, and personally attending Master Yuen's seminars. The first 75 pages provide short descriptions of Yuen's teachings about Chinese medicine in general, which provides a good foundation for understanding the text of the Stone teachings.In the rest of this generous-sized book, the Stones are arranged according to which level of Qi with which they most resonate, which is a potent way to apply them. She also lists their chemical compositions, crystalline structure, level of formations, chinese name, appearance, key characteristics, directionality, functions and uses, and combinations of stones to use.While this book is aimed at practitioners of Chinese medicine, it should be useful to many health care providers because of her clear explanations. She is a natural teacher; thank you, Leslie Franks!

An amazing and comprehensive book for anyone with a healing practice and who is drawn to working with crystals and stones. I've got every stone and crystal book published, I think - but was very excited to stumble across this one, with its in-depth exploration of HEALING APPLICATIONS with the stones, not just listing their metaphysical properties.A must have for any healer and/or lightworker!

WOW! What an amazing book! It's a big, thick, heavy tome of a book, just chockfull of information. If you have at least a general background in Chinese medicine (you have to have some way of diagnosing the problem according to TCM criteria, or else none of it will make sense), and love crystal healing, this book is absolutely indispensable. I've never seen anything like it. Leslie Franks has my deepest respect for putting this together. I absolutely love it.

On the plus side, this book provides the best window I've seen into how the mineral element can be incorporated into chinese medicine. On the other side of the ledger, there are a few key deficits: information on what constitutes a healing grade of stone is missing. Just as in herbology or dietary therapy, the quality of the material determines the quality of the results--and lower grade stones can have a negative impact on health. From my experience, the guidance on cleansing the stones is also substandard. If stones are only cleared on a weekly basis, a common guidance, they are quite likely to persistently hold onto lower energies cast off by the patient and/or practitioner. Third, there is a level of awareness and sophistication required when using any stone in a terminated crystal form. This is not something advised for the beginner. This point should be carefully pointed out: strong reduction or addition and significant imbalances to the patient can result. Working with terminated crystals requires inner sight and sensitivity, qualities which must be carefully cultivated first in order not to deplete or damage the patient. These are powerful tools, and IMHO, I would recommend working with this book first in an apprenticeship situation where the practitioner adding this to their repertoire is given close supervision and careful guidance.

After practicing acupuncture for 30 years, I began playing with applying Herkimer Diamonds to acupuncture points. The results blew me away. I have collected rocks, stones, crystals and gemstones my entire life. Then I googled and learned that there actually was stone medicine being taught from one of the most esteemed teachers in the field, Jeffrey Yuen, and some of his students. A few months later I discovered this book! I can't say enough about both the content and the ease of use of this book. It is brilliant. If you have found yourself at this page, your entire journey will be inspired and enhanced by this offering. To have had this book 30 years ago would have been miraculous. To have it now is truly a blessing for which I am very grateful and feel everyone interested in stones for healing and transformation would benefit greatly from having it in their personal library. Good diagnostic information, as well as, clinical uses of the stones provide the practitioner with useful choices. Highly recommended for Oriental medicine practitioners and body workers alike. Point locations are explained in Western terms for ease of use by those using Western traditions of treatment. This is a one-of-a-kind volume which everyone in Eastern medicine could benefit from. This review is about the book, "Vegetable Gardening in the Southwest" Paperback – January 7, 2015 by Trisha ShireyThe single thing that stands out most about this book is that it is easy to use. It has many descriptions, diagrams, and charts that are all arranged for easy access. It is easy to read and offers many good tips on gardening techniques. There are many other books that offer more material on specific topics like composting or raised bed, but this book is intended to be an "all-in-one" guide to making your garden work. It is also focused specifically on the SouthWest geographic region of the US.PART 1 - GETTING STARTED includes a chart of frost dates, discussions on soil types, composting and raised bed gardening.PART 2 - GET PLANTING is found in the middle, is the largest section of the book, and is arranged in month by month order, to make an excellent guide for activities. January begins with planning and November wraps up most harvesting. Each month incudes a primary task list and follows up with related topics. Each page is labeled with the month on the top corner making it easy to navigate to the correct month.PART 3 - EDIBLES A TO Z starts with a master planting and harvesting chart, arranged zone by zone and then continues with a dictionary/encyclopedia like section on individual vegetable plants. This section wraps up with resources, a further reading list and an index.The best short summary of this book is that it is very useful and practical.

This book is VERY thorough! It talks about soils, gives ideas on how to test soil, pH and how to adjust for it, what to do each month in anticipation and throughout spring, what the various needed nutrients are and how the loss of certain ones affect a plant's leaves....and I am only 1/4 through this book! I'm very glad I purchased it and appreciate all the work that must have gone into writing it! Thank you Trisha Shirey!!! As a new Central Texan, who got here as quick as I could from San Diego, CA; I needed to know more about how my plants could best survive here and what others could join them. We're going to create a raised garden and will definitely use your advice on doing that, too!

Five stars for the paperback and four stars for the Kindle version. Perfect for the novice gardener. I saw this book at Barnes & Noble before ordering the Kindle version. This book gives instructions on what to do and plant on a monthly basis according to your location. Very good content but the Kindle formatting is not the same as the physical book. Seems like there's a loss of integrity. Probably should have bought the paperback version.

I am in love with the simplicity of using this book as a manual. It is broken down by month so you can flip exactly to the month you're in and know what you should be doing. I also like that most of the info is in bullet points, very simple to reference, without having to read through dense paragraphs. Very basic info, fantastic for the newbie gardener (me!).

Really great book if you are new to gardening! If you have been gardening and reading for a while it's a little simplistic.

Love this book! It is organized in detail. excellent organic teachings. Can't wait to follow monthly what to do in the garden. I am a big Central Texas fan of Trisha Shirey!

Gardening ABC's. This book is well written and easy to follow for a beginning gardener.
