Hoyt L. Hickman has been a visiting professor of worship both at Drew University and at Vanderbilt University. Every human on this planet should read this book!It's not very long but it didn't need to be. It is heart wrenching and infuriating and inspiring and about a million other adjectives I could think of... but that's the kind of feeling we need to experience when we're reading about this type of horror. The real life, actual horror people inflict on one another, sick, twisted, wretched, heartbreaking and utterly disgustingness of what Nazi Germany really did.Elie survived, that in itself is a miracle, that he chose to share that terrible chapter of his life with all of us so that we may learn, that's his gift to us. Don't waste that.It only takes good men to do nothing for evil to prevail. Keep your eyes open, people.

This....I lack words. Mr. Wiesel has woven a tale of such epic proportions, describing in all too vivid detail the horrors of the holocaust. There is a REASON this book ranks up there with The Diary of Anne Frank as one of the definitive works for this subject matter. I was saddened to hear of Mr. Wiesel's passing. When it came time for my son to study the holocaust in school, I decided to add this book to his learning experience. This book captures the gravity of the situation, and explains the horrors, perhaps not adequately, because how could one convey that level of horror to anyone who hasn't lived it, but as well as I think is possible on paper. This is always, ALWAYS my first recommendation when the topic of holocaust literature is broached.

No one should need an excuse to re-read a book as powerful as Night, but if I needed one, the new(er) translation by the author’s wife provided it. Everything that needs to be said about this book has been said, I suppose, many times over. In its brief, straightforward narrative it captures not just the horror of the attempted extermination of Europe’s Jews, but the destruction that was wrought even in the souls of survivors. Amid all the other losses, including members of his family, the loss that persists through the book, is the narrator-author’s loss of faith, the loss of God. The one thing that might have helped make sense of the grotesque insanity was gone, and with it, a large portion of the previously pious young victim’s self and soul. Remarkably (particularly given how pious the narrator was before being herded in cattle cars with so many others to Auschwitz), the complete loss of a sense of God’s justice did not happen over the course of a long incarceration as he struggled to find meaning in the light of faith. The change was immediate, everything was lost in a day, so brutal, so thorough, was the Nazi violation. How could a just God let this happen?There are so many memorable scenes in this short book: the journey in the cramped cattle cars; the arrival at the camp; the sight, sound, and ash of the crematorium; the hanging of a child; the crusts of bread; the forced march when the camp was abandoned at war’s end; the gratuitous murders even in a place where gratuitous murder was organizing principle. And there are so many painful moments, most having to do with loss: the loss of God, the loss of identity, the loss of friends and family, in the end the loss of his father, too, who was his mainstay through most of the ordeal. But there are also moments of remembering that humanity must be preserved. As the camp was being evacuated, the prisoner’s stopped long enough to clean their prison camp. Why? To let the liberating army know “that here lived men and not pigs.” I was reminded of Italian chemist Primo Levi’s account of his imprisonment in Auschwitz, If This Is a Man, in which he describes the ex-army sergeant who washed daily, even though the water was dirty and he had only his soiled clothes to dry himself with. But he did it, and encouraged others to do the same, for the sake of dignity more than cleanliness, to remain human and to prevent the machine of war, imprisonment, and dehumanization from turning prisoners into beasts, as its masters wished it to do.This book is a ringing call to remember, and to resist injustice, ignorance, and apathy. As Wiesel said in his speech accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 (reprinted at the end of this book): “We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.”

Night, written by Elie Wiesel, is a short book that includes the narrator’s haunting personal experience with concentration camps during the holocaust. It is a necessary read full of true stories about Wiesel’s time in Nazi concentration camps. Forced out of his home as a teenager, Wiesel traveled with his family to Birkenau. He and his father embarked on the deadly and involuntary journey, moving from one death camp to another. Throughout the book, the author provides numerous anecdotes that provide the reader with an image of what these concentration camps were really like. This a mature book, but it is definitely a must read for teenagers and adults. The ideas may be a too strong for children or pre-teens. It is poignant and graphic, but gets a clear message across. If you’re looking for short read and have interest in the holocaust and the victims who suffered through it, this is the book for you. I suggest you read through the preface and the forward in the beginning of the book, as well as the author’s note at the end. All in all, this is a great book that will provide you with both information and a saddening perspective of World War II.

This is the true experience of Elie as a teenager with his dad trying to keep his father alive while surviving the holocaust. It gives you an inside view of the concentration camps and what millions of Jews experienced every day that they got to live. It is raw at times because it exposes what Elie saw with his own eyes, and the impact that it had on his thoughts and emotions at the moment.

I liked this book. I will not say I loved this book because the subject is too awful to be real. Reading this story I felt like that young boy asking "... Is this a dream..." It's hard for me, an infant of the 70's, a child of the 80's, a teen of the 90's, to believe that these atrocities ever occurred. I remember reading in history that Churchill/ Patton? (please correct me if I'm wrong) wanted pictures taken "... Because someday, there will be those who'll say 'this never happened'."I feel for the survivors, their families. I worry for my children who will learn that great men like this author are less than current winners of this prestigious award. It is up to us, the third generation, the generation that makes or erases history, "to look into that young Jews eyes and say ... That we are not forgetting [them]. When their voices are stifled, we will lend them ours"Here is my testimony in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

I discovered this book in a sideways sort of way. While working with Native American Rhetoric as a English graduate student, I read Theodora Kroeber's book "Ishi in Two Worlds" the account of the last known member of the Yahi tribe. During Ishi's final years, he developed a close friendship with his physician, Dr. Pope. Kroeber spoke of their mutual love for archery. I wondered if this could be the Pope of the Pope and Young Club who developed the scoring system for wild game taken with bow and arrow. The answer is yes, and that led me to this book. The book contains a brief account of Ishi written by Pope and discussions on the making of a traditional bow, arrows, quiver, and even arrow heads - all skills that were demonstrated to him by Ishi. While researching which of the several versions floating around would be the best purchase, I found several versions that excluded the photographs and diagrams that Pope included in the original book. This Kindle version (yellow and blue-gray horizontal pattern on front with the title in a framed box) includes all the photographs and diagrams. The Kindle price was less than any of the print copies available and the book has been easily accessable on my reader.

My fist experience with Hunting With the Bow and Arrow was long ago in a wonderful old first edition hardback version in my small hometown library. It made a lasting impression. In time I found the book in paperback. That copy has been read and reread so many times it is falling apart. I decided to buy a new copy through Amazon as a replacement. What a ripoff! The version from Amazon, published by General Books, and dated 2010, lacks all the illustrations of the original edition. Yet, all the illustrations are cited within the text. Further, the chapters run on one after the other, unseparated, as if they had been printed out on fan-fold paper. The crude table of contents does not list page numbers for the chapters, you have to hunt for them. If you want to learn how to make longbows, the text is there, but none of the illustrations, which convey so much information. If you want to learn about Ishi, the text is there, but none of the wonderful old photographs. If you want an illustrated version of the book, and you should, go to one of the on-line used book sellers and order an earlier version. The Amazon offering isn't worth the price paid for it.

An enjoyable and engaging classic of archery literature, although definitely of its time. The book documents in a lively the exploits of the author in his engagement with Ishi, the last of the Yani Indians, but also of his archery and hunting ideas and exploits. It contains ideas galore concerning Native Americans and their hunting technology, archery, bowmaking, early American archery, and bowhunting.Primarily for those interested in archery and the history of archery this is a book well worth reading and imbued with good humoured dedication to craft and life.

The charm of the writing, with its dated, flowery language and romantic tone, is perfectly counterbalanced with the unapologetic, bloody reality of the hunt. These guys did it, as Tred Barta put it, the hard way. But even Tred never had it so hard. They made their own gear. No fleece. No gortex. No GPS. No cell phones or game cams. They hunted until they killed, or found it absolutely impossible to kill. And they tracked for days, practiced for hours, trained for months. If you have picked up a traditional bow to hunt, this is the book for you. If you have killed game with rifle and have picked up a traditional bow to remember what hunting is like, you won't be able to put this book down.

Though the book itself is a great one, this is a reprint and doesn't include any photographs or drawings. I remember once reading the original copy from a library in Wisconsin. Descriptions included a drawing/diagram of how to make a deer-hide quiver. This doesn't exist in this copy. Quite a disappointment that they reprinted but only kept the text.

In 1914, 49 year old Ishi, the last of the Yani tribe walked out of the woods near Oroville, California. Ishi was the last of his people and he was the last "Wild Indian" in America. Anthropologists throughout America wanted to learn as much as they could from this wild man and he was soon living and working (as a janitor) at the University of California, Berkeley. Having no immunities to most disease that we are used to, he spent much time in a nearby hospital where Saxton Pope was a teacher. Anyone who has ever learned of the hardships of Ishi's life can't help but remember this fascinating historical figure.This book however, is not about Ishi although his teachings and skill are an important part of what you will read. This book is about what the title says "Hunting with the bow and arrow". Saxton Pope learned to use a bow from Ishi and carried the love of bow hunting for the rest of his life. This book covers everything from making your first bow to killing your first Grizzly in a pleasant and easy to read style that keeps you reading and wanting more. You can and will learn secrets that you would have never thought of , secrets that before Ishi, had been so completely forgotten that Dr. Pope had to reintroduce the techniques to other Native American Tribes.I am not a hunter, I have never used a bow but I have a great love of the outdoors and I loved every moment of this book. I feel like I have learned enough to supply food for myself and my family if the need arises. This is the syllabus for our church's course on Understanding Mormonism. It also helps that we have quite a few ex-mormons in the class to corroborate the text. There is a lot of great information in this book. It's something I go back to again and again when talking to my friend's neighbor's that are Mormon.

This is probably the 6th or 7th of these I have bought now. I pass them to friends who are in need. Great explanations in the differences of Christianity and Mormonism and helps you realize that you are speaking of two separate beings.

This book has really changed my thoughts about the Mormon faith. I thought I had a basic understanding of Mormonism, but I was really lacking in knowledge and understanding. I have much to learn before taking on the "Great Commission" with my LDS friends an neighbors. As I was taught years ago, do so with respect, humility, and grace.It is a powerful, and empowering book of knowledge that is verifiable.

Would have given full 5 stars if was able to find all the visual aides right away online (first one or two weren't as easy as the others I checked out further into the book). This is from a teacher I have known for years and I learned so very much from him. Living in Utah it was necessary to know this kind of information inside and out.

Excellent study .... take it in small chunks so you can implant the truth.

I felt this book was very well written and is helpful in understanding what the Mormon religion teaches. The Glossary is very complete and helpful. I also appreciated the web site that provided visual aids that can be used in witnessing to Mormons. Before reading this book I struggled to know how to talk to them about what they believed. But this book gave me practical tools to help me communicate and witness to them.

A GREAT tool!!!!

This book not only helped me know how to witness to Mormons, it also gave me answers for anyone who asks why I believe in many important Christian tenets--the Trinity, the deity of Jesus, and what biblical salvation is. It explains why Mormonism cannot be called Christian and why telling our Mormon friends about our Jesus and sharing with them the good news of salvation is the only loving thing to do. Perhaps the most helpful part of the book for me is found at the back, "The Glossary of Mormon Terms." Very enlightening! If you love Mormon people and have a desire to know how to talk to them about our faith, I highly recommend Daniel Thompson's book.

Very helpful.An additional item, after the visit -Some shows are written up (elsewhere) as Wonderful, positive, positive...We checked the discussions on TripAdvisor and all seemed promising for our daughter's birthday celebration.Yes, the music was expertly performed, true to the originals.Oh - the performance in between - utter raunch - we left.Re-reviewing the reviews - there were 1 in 20-30 warning you off.Pay attention - standards aren't.

This book has really good information that I haven't seen anywhere else. Vegas is not a typical kid destination so I felt like I needed some assistance. This book gives great ideas for activities and sight seeing. It gives very specific information about entertainment and where kids are and are not allowed. This one is a must read for parents traveling with kids to Vegas. My only concern is that it was published in 2009. It does list the ESPN Zone as an attraction and I'm pretty sure they closed the entire chain several years ago. I'm a little concerned that the things I've planned may be closed because the book is 2 years old. Great information, updated would be better.

Bought this book when planning a family vacation with my then 7 & 8 year old children. People were amazed at the number of things we did in Las Vegas that was GREAT family fun. A year later the kids still say it was their best vacation. Also includes helpful information about things to do outside of Las Vegas. Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Rhyolite (ghost town) were all things we enjoyed and all were a short drive away. Las Vegas can be a great base camp for many family oriented activities.

I read the reviews before purchasing this book and it is true that there is quite a bit of information that is out-of-date. Frommers should update it, or offer some updates online. However, globally, the book helps answer questions for parents traveling with kids to Las Vegas. I would say it falls VERY short on the vacation rental section, and I think more and more families are renting houses with private pools and spending their days on the strip or at other attractions and economizing and relaxing at home. Having a family stay on the strip is cramped and expensive. I did like the sections of the book that had ideas related to age groups, which is very helpful. I wish there were more guide books on the market for this topic - even one more would help! And for those going to Las Vegas soon, the Wet N Wild waterpark is opening May 2013 which is yet another option for family fun.

Too much information is not updated (nor were the index pages checked)! There were no talking camels at Luxor. There was no Pink Pony Cafe at Circus, Circus. There was no desert storm at the souvenir store at Showcase Mall. There was no Trojan Horse and no FAO Schwarz store at Caesar's Palace. The smoke at Circus, Circus was so bad we could not use the midway or several of the restaurants.Children have short attention spans and tire easily. With that in mind, it would have been helpful to know the location of attractions inside the huge hotel/casino complexes. Some complexes have few bathrooms or those that are not easily spotted.Have these editors really traveled with children?

Loaded with helpful info for planning a family trip. Maps, phone numbers, drive times, etc.If it had pictures I would have given it a 5.

This book really helped us decide what to do in Las Vegas. We do not gamble so we wanted "other" things to do. What we found is Las Vegas is not "family" friendly and you have to take your children into the gaming areas of most casinos to see the attractions. The book did offer suggestions that we did find helpful. Like how to avoid certain crowds and what shows are appropriate for kids. Much better than some of the other books out there.

I really liked the book, and the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because a good part of the book talks about hotel accomadations and booking flights, etc. and I had already done that by the time I bought the book. So half of the book was of no use to me, but the book had good recommendations.

I teach a course on business and finance, and it's for master's level students in public relations. I've used this textbook for several years in both the face-to-face classroom setting and online, and it's been outstanding in both venues! Every semester, students rave about the textbook; the adjective, awesome, has come up a number of times! One student told his friends and coworkers about Finance for Nonfinancial Managers; he described the book's approachability and ease of understanding -- and said "there is literally a waiting list to borrow it from me after the class!"Gene Siciliano breaks down complicated concepts into bite-size chunks. Students who were totally intimidated about business and finance at the beginning of the semester said they felt comfortable and confident by the end. This textbook is a perfect guide for this class, but I really it's relevant to anyone, from the college student to anyone in the workforce who wants to build their financial IQ. I'd give the book a six-star rating (but only five are allowed!)

Mr. Siciliano does a great job of explaining very complicated and sometimes dry subject matter in a understandable and easy way. Dare I say he even makes it fun, with his sense of humor too. For example, he uses a hypothetical example throughout the book called the Wonder Widget Company. You might know that the balance sheet contains both assets and liabilities? But at the bottom of the assets is a catchall category called, "cleverly", Other Assets! In another section, in Chapter 12, The Annual Budget, he titled "Tools for Telling the Future: Budgets, Forecasts, Projections, and Tea Leaves"! Of course this is serious subject matter, but Gene Siciliano writes with a flair and whether this is required reading for class or you are looking for an edge in understanding accounting reports, I would highly recommend this book. Interesting book.. for the price it is a good to have! It gave me some reminders on basic finance / accounting.. I work in a financial related field but not as a financial expert so it was a good way to understand some basic principle. Very nice. For the price, you can't really go wrong.
