This book veers a bit from the vampire stories in that it's not so much a story weaved around the vamps, but they're more threaded in to the story. Of course, Eric is intent on discovering what happened in the brief (relatively speaking as his lifetime is measured in centuries) time that he spent at Sookie's home. That's pretty much it in terms of vamp involvement. Frankly, that led to some disappointment. Alcide, however, features prominently in this installment and we learn a lot more about Weres and shifters. It just feels like something's missing from Charlaine Harris' normal style. One thing that I noticed, and is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, is the increasing use of catch-ups. I understand that some people like to just jump into a series without starting with the first novel. The rest of us, however, shouldn't be punished for it and forced to read catch-ups constantly. It's such a digression in momentum and drives me bonkers! It's still a good read. I wish I had more feelings about Sookie and Alcide so that I could savor some of the scenes between them, but it just didn't seem like he really cares for her, other than wanting to get in her pants. Speaking of which, how many men are hot for Sookie now? It's getting a bit tiresome to hear of yet another admirer hopping on the Sookie fan train. Sookie's love life can only be spread so thinly until it'll shatter. I hope that she finds someone worthwhile soon.We also learn more about Claudine and her surly twin, Claude. Tragedy, as usual, seems to follow hotly on Sookie's heels. Surprisingly, after the author has spent so much time telling us how isolated Sookie's house is from pretty much everywhere (except Bill, who's handily just across the adjoining cemetery), the volunteer fire department manages to put out a fire in a historic home (aged wood burns quickly, doesn't it?) before any major damage is done to the majority of it, other than the kitchen, happily destroying any evidence from the whole Debbie Pelt slaying. Reality check, please. One last note on editing... once again, this book seems to be filled with missed errors. I understand that spell check corrects words, but if the wrong word is in the sentence, but it's spelled correctly, it's still an error.

Sookie and Jason are on edge just waiting to see if Jason makes a change at the full moon. Sookie is not used to having so many men want her. Bill will always care for her and Eric has seemed to always stay interested, Alcide likes Sookie so much he's ready for a committed relationship, Calvin is trying very hard to court Sookie but she just can't imagine living in Hotshot even if she thinks highly of Calvin, and...........Even with all of these men wanting her, Sookie is currently single. It seems a new evil has once again come to town because there have been multiple people shot. With no leads and not much evidence everyone is wondering who this shooter could be. During all of this drama and attention from so many men, Sookie is now friend to the pack and so she attends first the burial of a very important were. It seems as though Sookie will never have time to rest for there is an upcoming ritual to determine who will be the new pack leader of the pack Alcide is part of. It is very competitive and ritualized and Sookie feels a little fear but also a little awe for seeing an event that takes place so rarely. Again, the book ends with Sookie a few seconds from death and a kiss with one of her many beaus.....I've enjoyed the book thoroughly.

Now, how many different things can happen in one novel. Sookie, waitress at a bar, is a telepath, whose life used to be bedeviled by her hearing people's thoughts. Once she entered into the world of supernaturals--vampires, weres, shape-shifters, fairies--she came to use her power as a tool. This volume, # 5 in the series, sees her facing many challenges.First, several would-be or past boyfriends are showing their interest in her, including ex-lovers Bill (a vampire) and Eric (another vampire--and a boss) and bar owner Sam and one-time pretend boyfriend Alcide. Second, someone is shooting shapeshifters and weres--including one person actually killed. Third, someone is out to get Sookie, half burning her home to the ground (she would have perished in the flames but for some luck). Then, she gets shot (because she heard someone's unusual thoughts, she ducked in time to take the bullet in her shoulder rather than someplace where the wound would have been mortal. Fourth, there is a challenge for packmaster, with Alcide's father competing against someone who turns out to be a cheater. The winner becomes packmaster. And the loser? Well, losing carries a high price here. Fifth, two detectives are investigating the death of Alcide's old girlfriend (whom Sookie happened to kill with a shotgun as the other woman tried to shoot her).Sookie is an attractive and sympathetic character. The vampires and other supernatural creatures are portrayed in a manner that is oddly effective, although certainly not realistic. The plots of these books tend to be somewhat incredible, with many different strands playing out. But the ensemble of characters works pretty well together and the books are quick reads.

#17,325 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Janette Oke's novels were the first romance fiction I ever read. I read them in middle school once I had exhausted my own library of books and decided to raid my mom's and my older sister's. I first read the Love Comes Softly Series (my favorite), then the Season's of the Heart series (which I did not like), and the Canadian West (which falls somewhere in the middle). This is without a doubt the best book in the Canadian West series. Elizabeth Thatcher is described by her mother as being a "sensible school teacher" in a letter to her brother, which she no doubt is. But, she is also funny, resourceful, kind, independent, inquisitive, observant and emotionally stable. Elizabeth is unique for her time period because she's not interested in getting married which is a big part of her character-until she meets a guy who is also not interested in getting married. They enter a kind of will they/won't they relationship that is hindered by misunderstanding and long distance. I have 2 criticisms of this book. **Spoilers** First, Janette Oke does not give a compelling reason why Elizabeth originally leaves for the west. If it was for the reasons we are told, it is made very clear that her mother would not be happy with the situation Elizabeth ends up in, and she and her brother even decide not to tell her. The shenanigans which ensue make for good storytelling, but leave a gaping hole in the original motivation. Secondly and more importantly, we don't get to see what Wynn Delany is thinking and why he likes Elizabeth. I can only surmise that he mainly likes that she's pretty because her independence and capability seem completely lost on him in the second book where we actually get scenes from his perspective. However, if you look at this book alone, Wynn's motivations are quite mysterious. The only thing we know clearly is that he does not want to get married, which is told to us several times by Elizabeth's sister-on-law, Mary and by Wynn. How Wynn's character arc ends up occurring, we are not told. Anyway, these criticisms are nitpicking because the book is decent and depicts a strong independent woman for the time. However, I don't recommend continuing with the series as this strong woman disappears in the next book.

As many have mentioned, Season 2 is not as good as Season 1. That being said, it is a necessary season for understanding the series. The third season that follows is really good and I have already watched that on the Hallmark Channel. Therefore, if you liked Season 1, you must watch Season 2, so that you can watch Season 3.My biggest beef with this collection is that it does not come with subtitles that have been done well. You can use your "mute" setting to have sub-standard subtitles with many typos. It would have been nice for the deaf and hard of hearing, if the subtitles were done well. I have voiced this complaint to Hallmark, because the level of subtitles has dropped on all of their shows and movies. It wasn't this bad even a year ago. They never responded to my e-mail, so I don't know the reason for it.Lastly, I am a big fan of this show and I really do like the characters. That's probably why Season 2 is hard to watch. Elizabeth spends a lot of time away from Jack and when they are together, they constantly have problems. It makes for a lot of tension and almost made me want to stop watching. But, it gets better!!! Elizabeth realizes that money and having an easy life are not in keeping with who she is.

We have loved this series and were so excited to get the 2nd season. However, while the 2nd season is family friendly, it is also cliche and the lines are just cheesy to the point that all my kids are groaning over them. What used to be a fun time to watch together, has become almost dreaded because of this... We're slowly getting through this season and we're hopeful the 3rd season is better written. The audience is intelligent and would appreciate the writer make note of that.

We were so excited to start airing Season 2 to continue the budding romance between Elizabeth and Mountie Jack. Our Cd's were not numbered and there was no Index on the CD jacket so we started with the first CD in the case. We were so lost and confused with the story line and out of frustration did a search on the Amazon site to try to find what CD's we were missing. Turns out we watched the last episode in Season 2. Thanks to the review by R. Koehler, we now have the correct order for watching Season 2.

Great little history of of cultures, time-period, & Alberta, Canada. And then there's the "characters."Love when a relaxing book teaches but is not preachy!Sense of right and wrong (with a purpose): Doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do.Read and then watch on AMAZON PRIME (not paid for that plug) TV series WHEN CALLS THE HEART

such a different feel from season 1 that it was a disappointment at first. Feel that all that crap about Elizabeth and her family in Hamilton could have been left out. It was like watching the same scenes originally done in Dr Quinn 20 years before. That said, Hamilton storyline aside, the show still has the ability to have you glued to your seat and you'll find yourself yelling out "No!"when the final scene plays out and you realise you have to run out and buy Season 3 immediately to find out what happens next.

I really enjoyed the pilot for the TV series. By the time this DVD was released, I'd already forgotten that the cast was different from the TV series.I hope Hallmark keeps the TV series on for many seasons. It's so nice to have decent programming that the whole family can (and will) watch.

The narrator was amazing! As a teacher, I really liked this story. It did a good job of showing how teachers really do get attached to their students and really care for them. I would say half of the story was about her as a teacher in the Backwoods and the other half (I actually started to wonder if there was a love story until more towards the end) was a sweet love story between her and a mountie... just a good old fashioned love story.

She lives in London with her husband and son. How do you solve a problem like the Princes in the Tower? What does a historical novelist do with Edward and Richard, heirs to the British throne who were purportedly locked in the Tower by their uncle and then disappeared so that he could become Richard III? Conspiracy theories have flourished for centuries, but no strong evidence has emerged to solve the mystery. A novelist has any number of possibilities to pursue. In The White Queen, the novel that chronologically precedes The White Princess, Philippa Gregory makes her choice and places their fate in the hands of their feisty mother, Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward IV and a key player in the War of the Roses, the dynastic feud among the Plantagenets between the Houses of York and Lancaster. She substitutes a pauper for young Richard, ensuring that the Duke of York gets away. The follow-up to such a dramatic decision inevitably needs to continue this story line. Richard has disappeared. Does he come back? At first, The White Princess seems to tell another story – that of Elizabeth of York, the White Queen’s daughter, and one-time mistress of Richard III, who on his death becomes the wife of his slayer, the Tudor Henry VII. (Confused yet? I am still reeling at the thought that she was mistress to her uncle!) Elizabeth is the embodiment of the painful transition between York and Tudor monarchies, her strategic marriage to Henry VII the outward expression of York loyalty as demanded by the Tudors. Gregory is known for her retakes on British royal history, viewing the scheming, the power struggles, the battles exclusively from women’s points of view, exploring how the Queen or Princess finds her own source of power and influence in the interstices left open by the men. Elizabeth of York is no different, using her beauty, her popularity with the people, her instinctive wiliness and political acumen to bear on Henry VII, with varying results. She may pragmatically have to accept that the Tudors are in the ascendance, but she can see that her distant and paranoid husband is not a natural as a king; she must teach him how to win the love and respect of his subjects, who still view the family of York with affection and nostalgia. Eventually Elizabeth and Henry achieve a kind of marital truce, and grow to love each other, if only for a time. There are plenty of beddings, of ladies-in-waiting with knowing looks, of confinements and wet nurses and babies – including, of course, the future Henry VIII, characterized by Gregory even in his boyhood as a sensualist. Inevitably, however, The White Princess is still the story of men, and specifically of the spectre of the lost princes. Does lost Prince Richard return in the form of pretender to the throne Perkin Warbeck (referred to in the novel most often simply as “the boy”)? Gregory places his identity in Elizabeth’s hands, demonstrating the impossible position she is in: acknowledge the boy as her true brother and bring down her husband and any possibility that her sons might become King, or deny him and see her possible brother executed for treason. In this impossible situation, Elizabeth must tread carefully, and Gregory does an expert job of maintaining this tricky balancing act to the very end. Relishing the personality clashes and political machinations of an insecure Tudor court, she makes the current British royal family, with its crystal-clear line of succession, seem very dull indeed.

From Booklist

Gregory charts the vicissitudes of a high-stakes political marriage in her latest diverting epic. It’s 1485; the Wars of the Roses have ended, but the victorious Henry VII sits insecurely on his throne. Still mourning her lover, Richard III, Princess Elizabeth of York must wed King Henry to unite their warring houses. Unlike his predecessors, Henry has no personal charm, and the novel excels at depicting his paranoia as royal pretenders pop up and threaten England’s stability. Kept ignorant of the political scheming around her and caught between her York relations and securing her children’s inheritance, Elizabeth can’t match the dynamism of her mother, Elizabeth Woodville (The White Queen, 2009), or mother-in-law, Margaret Beaufort (The Red Queen, 2010), and they occasionally steal the spotlight. Nonetheless, the younger Elizabeth is an observant narrator, and her difficult position reflects historical reality, as does her growing closeness to her beleaguered husband. The repetitive language will either drive points home for readers or drive them batty, but the novel is as replete with intrigue and heartrending drama as Gregory’s fans expect. --Sarah Johnson

First and foremost, readers should remember that this is historical fiction not history, per se. This is the story of Henry Tudor, who got his crown and became King Henry VII of England by defeating King Richard lIl of the house of York at the battle of Bosworth. He soon marries Princess Elizabeth of the house of York, daughter of King Edward IV and his wife, Queen Elizabeth. He does so to give his kingship stability and unite England. Unfortunately, the best laid plans often go awry. Not much is known about the women of that era, other than the basics: birth, marriage, children, and death. So, here the author tries to make the women three dimensional. The author also weaves a narrative on the women's take of the events of the day. It is certainly an intriguing tapestry that the author weaves. While at times the book is a bit repetitive, it is still an entertaining work of historical fiction. Fans of the author will not be disappointed.

Philippa Gregory can write. Obviously, as she has so many books to her name. Even when I disagree with content, I still want to keep reading her stories.I watched the Starz version of "The White Princess" and wanted to read the source material. To my dismay I discovered that my issues with the TV show are the same issues I have with the book.I don't consider myself a Tudor expert by any means, but I am fascinated with the War of the Roses. I especially love the story of Henry and Elizabeth since they seemed to truly fall in love with one another and ended the war between their houses.Everything I've read about Henry VII is not presented in this book. That he was fiscally responsible, organized his kingdom well and was a king to be admired is not how Gregory imagines him, apparently. In her book he is a cold, mean, vindictive man who uses his love as a weapon. He's paranoid to the point of almost mental illness and is just generally an unlikable character/man. That goes against all that I've read about his love for his wife and his children. There is also no historical indication that he had an affair with Kathy Gordon/Lady Katherine Huntly. Especially since Elizabeth took her into her household and cared for her the rest of her life. And that when Henry had the chance to marry Kathy after Elizabeth's death, he did not take it. That doesn't sound like a man in love or a man with a mistress. Henry is one of the few English kings to not have an official mistress. Given his mother's piety and upbringing, I believe that he was a man of morals and would not cheat on the queen he adored. While Elizabeth is presented as a strong character in the beginning, toward the end of the book that radically changes. Literally the entire last half of the book is her saying, "I don't know. I don't know." It's so bad that Henry even mocks her for it on several different occasions. Instead of driving her story (as Gregory tells us is most important, that we see all the ways Elizabeth ruled and had influence even if history didn't record it), she is instead out of the loop in every event in her life. So that when questioned, she literally can't say anything but "I don't know." Which is a pity, to see her character reduced to such nothingness in her own story, especially since Gregory wanted the opposite to happen. One of my main issues with the show and this book is that by presenting Henry and Elizabeth as enemies forced to wed (another point that most historians disagree with--they had a good deal of time to get to know one another and it seemed that, especially on her side, there were real feelings there before they married and he certainly didn't rape the girl and try to impregnate her first), part of what drives this story should be Elizabeth's surrender. That you see her husband falling in love with her, and I wanted that moment where she tells him she feels the same. It's sort of in this book (sort of in the show, too), but it falls completely flat. She says it at the end of a scene. So we don't see Henry's reaction. Winning Elizabeth's love is important to him (how can he make the country love him if he can't even get his own wife to?). I wanted to see what happened with that moment. How it changed things for them. What it meant for them as a couple. We don't get that here, at all.I'm not sure how I feel about the Perkin Warbeck thread or who killed the princes in the tower. I don't have enough information on either subject to form a sure opinion, but I'm not sure Gregory persuades me to her point of view in the book. (Like I believe that Richard III killed those boys and the reason he didn't display their bodies was that he didn't want anyone to know that he'd murdered children to be king.)Anyway, this book has very little romance and affection. The characters often have these long monologues that are not how real people speak, but more like a historian is trying to explain a fact by putting it into her characters' mouths and letting them spell out all the different intricacies of what's happening in a particular scene. I wanted more Henry and Elizabeth, their day to day lives and their love story, and what I got was a bunch of explanations about battles and fear and obsession with pretenders to the throne. Not one I'd ever read again.

I used to love Gregory's books. The characters were richly drawn and dialogs revealed their inner worlds. I noticed that has not been the case with the last several books. I am thinking the author may be getting lazy and is cranking out these books without putting as much thought into them as she did with her first ones. Did these books become just a money-making machine for her? I don't want to accuse her of anything but really, for the price she is charging, the quality is just not there anymore. The main character Elizabeth is so incredibly boring. I laughed when I saw somebody else say in the review how Elizabeth got on their nerves because the only thing she ever said was "I don't know." And that even Henry's character got irritated with that. I laughed because it was exactly what I thought at some point. And when Henry commented on it, I thought "Man, I am with you, she is so annoying!"The dialog, in general, was kept to a minimum so the book read more like a historical chronical vs. a novel.I really don't like the latest trend of narrating from the first person because it limits our access to other characters' inner worlds. All we can rely on is the person's perception of others' emotions and thoughts. The problem with Elizabeth's character is that she never knew what was happening around her (hence the consistent answer "I don't know" to most of the questions she was ever asked). So the whole story is being told from the perspective of someone who has an extremely limited view of events. You judge it for yourself how interesting that could possibly be!

After watching the Starz production of The White Princess , I was eager to read the Philippa Gregory novel. As a fan of Elizabeth of York, I devour most everything I can find about her and the first Tudor king, the underrated Henry VII. Disappointment is the only way I can describe my reaction to this novel. It starts out well, although leaning heavy on the theory Elizabeth was Richard III’s lover (not proven). Henry is a complex but admirable character until about three-quarters into the book where he turns into this hateful, extremely paranoid, dare I say just idiot. To say this book doesn’t do Henry justice is a massive understatement. When I finished it, it truly left a bad taste in my mouth. Nobody likes to witness a character assassination.

This is an excellent book. Very thorough. I learned a great deal from this book. I know a lot about the japanese sword. This book is an excellent reference for just about any question. Great for beginner as well as advanced students. It is not a how-to book. This is a subject that needs "doing". Yet, this is very helpful.

This is a good reference book for the Japanese Sword enthusiast!

Good info but very lengthy and could use with some good edit.

Classic book that needs to be in every iaido student's library. Great delivery from the supplier.

It is the book which I was looking and was a great proce

A must have for any Budo person's library.

My iaido master recommended this book to me and it has been very helpful. It is a good reference book for when I am working on my own and have questions. Although, the book can never replace a good iadio master, it is a must-have for any serious iaido student.

Not only does this book provide a great basic explanation of basic iaido kata, it offers a very in-depth history of Japanese swordsmanship that makes this even more of a must-read.

#824,225 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

In Joshua Foer's book, Moonwalking with Einstein, Joshua raves about Tony's memory skills and his use of the Memory Palace to do so. So I was intrigued to learn more about memory techniques and found Tony's book. While perhaps I purchased too quickly as it was not about the Memory Palace, but rather Mind Mapping, I was still intrigued so I read it. After the first 25% of the book providing an introduction I was expecting to learn how to create a memory map. Ditto after 50%. Ditto after 80%. But all it was until that point was just bravado about how Mind Mapping can be used for everything known to mankind, short of curing cancer . . . although giving Tony more pages I am sure he would take credit for that. I won't fault Tony, but the Kindle version is useless. After 80% of the book when he finally (and I say finally with exasperation) gets into creating a memory map and showing examples, it is impossible to read on a Kindle. My next step is going on line to see what he was talking about. I don't doubt Tony's memorization skills nor that a Mind Map is a valuable tool in some (and even many) applications. But I was extremely disappointed with the book and had I known and was interested in the subject of Mind Mapping, I would search for another author that can skip to the chase and explain what it is and how to use it. Note: I'd give it 1 star but I did seem Mind Maps in the book so I will go online to see what they are.

The idea can be passed in a moment. The rest of the book is examples and exercises to help you master it. I got frustrated by my software, so will go back to doing this by hand to master it. Though some of the maps he calls out as exemplars are baffling to me. I’m giving it 4*’s until I practice.

I enjoy reading Tony's book, wish he could send me his memory palace paper.

Mind mapping is a technique, not a cult--or so I thought. But the author's hyperbolic language, his relentless self-promotion, his insistence on adherence to the "Laws," and the warnings about false prophets and their idols (the concept map or, saints preserve us, the sunburst diagram) are very offputting. And, as with many self-help books, the salient information could be conveyed in about half the space. That said, the book is appealingly designed and does contain some useful information.

I have been a student and fan of Tony Buzan's Mind Mapping technique for decades. This book is an excellent refresher for anyone who has used the system. It includes additional suggestions for how to use Mind Mapping in every day life.I had hoped it would take us further in depth than the original book but I guess the author did so well initially that this book just reinforced and supported how well the Mind Mapping system has been used world wide.I received my copy via Netgalley to review but these opinions are my own

The book introduced new concepts that have helped greatly in taking notes.

A wonderful mind map. The people in the training centre, showed me how to use it. In fact, it thought me how to deal with Kenny Loggins, which meant to leave it alone, as this company, that I started called Kenny Loggins' and subsequently franchised it, brought great success. The mind map was good, and I learnt from it. Especially how to build Kenny Loggins.

The best book by Tony ever ! Buy the book , read it , digest it , use it & live it !Thinking is tough business. Anything like mind mapping that makes it easier & fun is a great thing
