As a project management instructor and course developer at a state university, a project management keynote speaker, and someone who has been training project managers for nearly two decades, I highly recommend this book. I have also helped hundreds to pass their PMP exams (including training PMI employees) and although some folks claim they passed without this, I firmly believe that the PMBOK is a must-have.I have owned every edition of the PMBOK and I can tell you that it's gotten better with age. Let's face it, the material isn't the most exciting but at least it's much more readable than ever. Processes are more refined (some may remember core vs. facilitating processes in older versions) and are titled more consistently (used to have some start with verbs and others with nouns), descriptions of inputs/tools & techniques/outputs are clearer, and illustrations are less confusing. That said, the book still only covers the "whats". If you actually want to know "how" to execute some of these processes, you will need another resource like Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling.For those who have seen some of the PMBOK's poor ratings in reviews of previous versions, you have to understand that this is a high-level guide, not an elaborate text or a mystery novel. As a result, do not expect to be a project management guru at the end or be entertained with creative irony.Anyway, since many of you are looking at this because you want to take the PMP exam, here is some advice:- Although you may be able to obtain a soft copy of this book by being a PMI member, I recommend having a physical copy. In all my years of schooling, I've never even used a highlighter but I did for the PMBOK when I was studying for this exam over a decade ago. It turns out that almost everything was worth highlighting but it forced me to read each line thoroughly.- You will need another book since many exam concepts aren't even covered in the PMBOK. I personally like PMP Exam Prep, Seventh Edition: Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam or CAPM/PMP Project Management Certification All-in-One Exam Guide with CD-ROM, Second Edition. You do not even need the latest editions. Trust me, the general concepts will be the same. For instance, earned value lessons in Rita's 1st edition from yesteryear will be the same as those in 7th or 8th editions. SPI will always be EV/PV.- When submitting project experience on the application, you can submit work even if your title was not Project Manager. If you worked on projects and have played a lead role, it may count so submit it. The key point is that you should be submitting project leadership activities. You still need 4500 hours of project experience if you have a bachelors or 7500 hours without a bachelors. Also, always submit more than those thresholds since some activities may be not be accepted.- Do not buy flash cards; instead, make your own. Get a stack of index cards and start writing terms/concepts on one side with definitions/formulas/descriptions on the back side.Hope this helps. I gave this book 5 stars NOT because I loved it, but because in my opinion you must read this book, at least 3 times through (I read it 3 times through) before taking the exam. Please realize, you will be tested ONLY on the content of THIS BOOK. So, go ahead and buy another book on studying for the PMP exam, but if that book covers any topic(s) that are NOT in THIS BOOK, you are learning content that is irrelevant for this exam. That's what I discovered anyway. I bought Joseph Phillips study guide, and although it was helpful, there were many terms and content items NOT in the PMBOK guide, and therefore I did not get any questions on the real exam related to those terms/topics. For example, Joe Phillips covers organization theories like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and there were no questions like this on the real exam (and it's NOT in PMBOK Guide). Also, I took 5 practice exams from 3 different sources (one was from the Joseph Phillips CD) which turned out to give me false confidence because the real exam was a LOT harder. I passed the exam yesterday after studying for over a year (not continuous). I think you'd have to study for 3-4 months straight if this material is new to you. So what do you need to study? First, you must MEMORIZE all the terms and concepts. That is hard if your memory is not great like mine. Second, you must MEMORIZE the PROCESSES and general FLOW of events. Understand the 47 processes and what events occur in each process--and what the major ITTOs are in each process. I recommend memorizing the 47 processes and being able to write them down in the chart before you take the exam. Memorize all the formulas. Know your contract types--I was surprised by how many Procurement questions there were. I cannot over emphasize that the exam was one of the hardest I've taken. According to the staff at the Sylvan Testing Center near me, where I took the exam, at least half the people who take it there fail. Good luck.

This outdated attempt to control copying makes it aggravating to read. It is like your eyes are out of focus and you can't do anything about it.There is currently no disclosure in the product description on Amazon that this is the case. I bought this version (rather than the current 6th-edition) because of the myriad complaints regarding the misplaced anti-copy printing on the 6th-edition. Apparently they decided to do the same with this 5th-edition as well. I am returning the book.I also test scanned a page and was easily able to remove the background watermark which is purportedly there to prevent copying. So it effectively does nothing to prevent a person from copying the pages at will. It DOES however, punish the vast majority of purchasers who are legitimate readers of the book.PMI seems like a good organization for organizing and managing the PMBOK. However, the decision to print on ineffective anti-copy paper is asinine. Modern technology and the easiest matter of seconds renders this myopic attempt completely ineffective. You'd think they would test this before dispensing a book that primarily delivers headaches, eye-strain, and frustration instead of valuable content.I am giving two stars rather than one because the book does contain valuable content. You just can't get to it very easily and for any length of time unless you enjoy self-torture.

The MOST difficult Exam I have ever taken!If you have no history in Project Management, take the CAPM Exam first.Read this MANUAL three times first, then read other PMI books on PMP e.g. Risk, Ethics, Business Calcs etc.Then, take a class, (you need required CE's anyway) twice a week for 6 weeks, then schedule the EXAM.My guess is 6 months.Do you have a Bachelor's degree, but not a Master's?Would you like to change careers but don't know how?Here is the answer!You don't have to spend 5 years at College and $60,000 on an MBA!And....would you like to make $125,000/year?

This book has too many pages full of screen shots. Aside from that however, and some funky humor, the book is great for entry-level VB COM developers. The material is easy to follow, the examples are great, and you'll learn from this book!

Very good book to introduce into the complex field of COMs. In my 7 yrs of programming, this book actually explains the subject of COMs in a very easy to understand manner.

I am torn between liking this book for its style and excellent way of communicating the subject matter and disliking it for the lack of consistency.The book starts out with an "introduction" to COM in a way that would be more confusing than helpful for beggining programmers... I barely made it out after reading through a lot of "unnecessary" content for what was about to come. It seems, after reading this "introductory" cahpter, that the books was going to be at a higher level than what it actually was. The following chapters were excellent, easy to follow but maybe, just maybe way too basic. What I mean is that for a book at this "level" the author, for example, shouldn't have to explain what passing a parameter by reference or by value are and how they differ. Even though the book is an introduction to COM it shouldn't be an introduction to programming? and therefore these concepts should be assumed, and like this example I found more than a handful of other ones with similar toneThen the book takes a couple of interesting turns and covers alot of ground in a very short period of time, and does so very well.It essence I think it is a great book as an INTRODUCTION to COM, not appropriate for the Programmer to Programmer Series in my opinion. If you have a clear concept of what COM is and if you are looking for more of an implementation guide, you shouldn't look at this book. I finished it, because I started it!, otherwise it was just a nice review and an "entertaining" refresher course. After reading through the first couple of chapters I knew I wasn't going to find many nuggets of golden knowledge here.Additionally, as of this date, the book is a little bit outdated, but the concepts that it covers are always helpful in the learning process for newer technologies and even for competing ones.

COM is a programmatic challenge in C++. Unfortunately many in-depth discussions of COM assume that you need to know all those pointer-level details. But as a VB developer, much of COM's interface complexity is handled automatically. Mr. Lewis approaches COM with this understanding.The text is readable and thorough. Its diagrams have been stripped down to the specifics of each discussion. Even the lollipop diagrams are understandable. (I easily forgive the barnyard analogies.) The author attempts to clarify rather than dazzle. He makes IUnknown feel more like a friend than a stranger.This is a worthwhile reference on its own, and a good supplemental text when studying for the VB Distributed (i.e., "VB COM") exam, 70-175. Its comfortable writing style belies a richness of content. The author's focus on his target audience is sustained and appropriate. No single book can cover everything (and you really don't want to see everything) about COM.If you wish to bathe in the ugly realities of COM from a C++ perspective, Prendergast's MCSD Solution Architectures book is painfully detailed, and mostly about COM. (I do not recommend Prendergast for 70-100 exam preparation, if you're a VB developer.)Weaknesses: Significant performance issues which relate to programming COM, DCOM and MTS are not addressed in great enough depth, nor with great enough emphasis. A good in-process COM object usually makes a dreadful object in MTS. Likewise, the critical need for custom marshaling of parameters to DCOM objects is slighted, as is the disastrous performance penalties of using collections.A word about errors and editing. In the publishing industry, most book manuscripts require 18 to 36 months to reach the bookshelf. For books on emerging (and rapidly changing) technologies, publishers have gotten the cycle down to an astounding 6 to 9 months. Hence, more errors. My experience with Wrox books is that the errors are few, and tend to be typographical. Their technical editors are among the most thorough in the industry. In this particular book, the occasional errors are inconsequential.Conclusion: If you are a VB developer who needs to learn more about COM, this is a solid choice. If you are a 70-175 exam candidate, read this book and enjoy that warm deja vu satisfaction after passing the exam. If you'll be doing COM with C++, buy a different book.

If you want to know why Guatemala is the way it is, and you have the tolerance to read a wide variety of source documents, I highly recommend this book. If a Michener book is as historic as you want to be, this may not be for you.

The Guatemala Reader is an impressive compilation of 200 texts in a broad, comprehensive introduction to Guatemala’s history, culture, and politics. I wish I had this when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the early 70s, or when studying for my Masters at the Institute of Latin America at the University of Texas later in the decade, not to mention over eight years working with different organizations, as these materials provide a wealth of insights into the beauty and complexity of Guatemala. This book will appeal to travelers, scholars, students and practitioners alike as it presents the stark realities behind the beautiful façade.The editors bring together a formidable source of information about the Maya, including selections from the first piece, and an excerpt from the Popol Vuh, a mid-sixteenth-century text believed to be the single most important source documenting pre-Hispanic Maya culture. Acknowledged experts like Michael Coe provide fascinating background information on “Breaking the Maya Code”, which was made possible by a Soviet linguist who travelled from Russia to Guatemala in 1990. While there, he received a medal from Guatemala’s first civilian president, only to have modern Guatemala politics come to the fore when he received a death threat and had to depart from Guatemala in haste. Each article is preceded by insightful background information like this.“Acts of Genocide: Commission for Historical Clarification” provides invaluable background to understand the longstanding racism within the country. The commission describes how the army defined entire Maya communities as “internal enemies”, so the annihilation of Maya populations was intentional, even though the military’s overarching motivation was officially to “defeat the insurgency”. I’d heard of such examples of ethnic cleansing, but didn’t appreciate the history behind it until reading some of these articles. Additional articles provide a real appreciation of the incredible influx of refugees to the U.S., which, according to Exodus, the Catholic Church estimated that a million people, or 15% of the population, were displaced during the violent period of the 1980s.New sources of information made possible by the “Freedom of Information” act provide an additional appreciation of the CIA’s 1954 orchestrated coup that overthrew a democratic government, which led to the appalling violent period that lasted nearly four decades and included six hundred massacres in indigenous communities, a campaign the United Nations ruled to be genocidal. Such documents as the CIA’s “A Plan of Assassination” showed how they compiled lists of Guatemalans “to eliminate immediately in the event of a successful anti-communist coup.”More contemporary problems, such as the influx of drugs and proliferation of gangs, are chronicled in “The Untouchable Narco-State”, in which the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala told the Associated Press that 75% of the cocaine that reached American soil passes through this Central American nation. Charles is a wonderful teacher. If you want to learn basics of painting and get a great start into being an artist, this book is a must. A great thing about this book is that you'll learn how to express yourself. Sometimes beginners copy their teacher's style, but not with Mr. Sovek. His encouraging manner will help you to develop your style. He also gives great advice how to overcome fears and frustration that we often get. It is one of my favorite art instruction books I've ever bought.

Charles Sovek holds nothing back. He explains how to use the book, and get started painting. There are 30 exercises In this book. If you want to learn to paint or improve your ability to paint, this is a fantastic book. Also great for those who want to review the fundamentals of painting. 152 pages in this book. A favorite in my library of art books!

I found this book extremely helpful. The lessons are organized in a way that build over time. I prefer a more organized course of study that covers the major principles of painting, and that's exactly what this book/course provides. Well worth it. It's probably best for beginner and intermediate painters. Although even seasoned pros can likely pick up a tip or two.

I was impressed by the author's account of the Cruzan case -- he was the family lawyer who "lost" in front of the Supreme Court but not quite -- and was led to purchase this broader study of the "right to die." As he notes in the conclusion, this 200 or so page work does not cover everything, but it does a very good job, in down to earth prose, to cover most of the bases. And, do so in a balanced fashion that states his views while not trying to provide all the answers. He starts with an extended look at the tragic Schiavo case.

William Colby has provided a volume of information needed by people dying and by those caring for them. There are many choices for both and this book provides them. Read in your leisure or when you need to make difficult decisions. It will help you.

It was a good book for its need, and though it is a bit dry, it isnt nearly as bad as I had expected.

Between author William H. Colby's role as the attorney for the family of Nancy Cruzan - who fought for the removal of her feeding tube, when she was in a Persistent Vegetative State 15 years before the Schiavo case dominated national discourse - and "Unplugged"'s subtitle, "Reclaiming our Right to Die in America", you might expect unsubtle advocacy. Colby doesn't give it, however; and although he talks about being impartial at excessive length, he does stick to the facts when the 3 individual cases (Karen Ann Quinlan, Nancy Cruzan, and Terri Schiavo) on the right-to-die issue he discusses are brought up.The most valuable part of the book was the grounding Colby gives in the evolution of Medical Technology and the role this has played in the debate and how it's arisen; it's striking how new these issues are and how much they are dependent on technology. PVS patients weren't sustainable at all in the past - the term wasn't even coined until 1972 - and the different between the extensive surgery for a feeding tube for Quinlan and Cruzan, and the simple procedure for Schiavo, is vast; it may get even simpler tomorrow. Given that debates have turned on how extreme the measures taken are - and how hopeless a situation is - the moral debates are going to continually change as technology develops, a situation Colby illustrates well.He also shows the potential pitfalls in living wills and the legal mess that still surrounds this issue; his solution is a power of attorney form and discussion with your loved ones. Giving them the power to make decisions and extensive knowledge of what you wanted is a good; a united family with clear knowledge of your desires is unlikely to have trouble carrying them out. Even if the point in the book is repeated ad nauseum.The book is repetitive, though this is not always his fault - he provides a necessary accounting of the Schiavo case, which can't avoid covering the endless repetitive and futile appeals. All in all, "Unplugged" covers a lot of useful ground that was missed in the shouting atmosphere surrounding the Schiavo case; brief tie-ins of related issues (such as assisted suicide) add to the use of the book not as taking another side in the debate but giving information you can use decided where you stand and what you should do about it.

It looks at both sides of the issues and doesn't take sides (unlike the recent books written by the Schindler and Shiavo families and others surrounding the Terri Schiavo case). It enables the reader to come to their own conclusions on the issue without being preachy. A must read for everyone.......if I could give 6 stars I would!

If you have read William Colby's book Nancy Cruzan, The Long Goodbye, you will find his latest book equally informative. Mr. Colby provides an excellent medical history that has brought us to our current debate about killing vs. allowing individuals to die. He shares recent cases and offers insight to both sides of the issue. This book should be read by anyone who has been faced with making end-of-life care decisions and by all who want to ensure that their end-of-life care is clearly understood.

"Unplugged" is superbly written and thoroughly researched. Colby provides an unbiased perspective on complex legal, medical, and ethical issues in terms easily understood by both the lay person and professional. This book is invaluable for anyone who cares about how they or their loved ones experience life - and death.
