Maybe it's only because the "bad" stories get more press, but it often seems like all of the celebrity "heroes" (singers, actors, athletes, etc) are greedy, vain, or downright criminal! Thankfully, that's not the case, and there are still some truly worthy heroes to be found.Mike Fisher is one of them.This book tells the story of one of the NHL's grittiest players, currently a Center for the Nashville Predators. It chronicles his life as a child growing up in Peterborough, Ontario, and his rise through the professional hockey ranks to the highest levels of national and international competition. More importantly, it reveals how his life and his career have been impacted by his faith in Jesus Christ.Defender of Faith stays pretty surface-level as far as the specifics of the Christian faith, choosing to focus on portraying major events in Fisher's life rather than dwelling on doctrines or denominational issues. This is to be expected, as the book's target audience is children ages 9-12, as part of the ZonderKidz Biography Series. For a kids' book, it is excellent; an easy and enjoyable read.The book's greatest strength is the way it shows Fisher living out his faith in a winsome manner despite his role in the high-pressure world of professional sports. A naturally quiet and reserved man, Fisher realized the platform that he had to impact lives, and has stepped into the public spotlight (particularly since his marriage last year to country music superstar Carrie Underwood) as an outspoken advocate of Christianity and community involvement.I was particularly interested in hearing how he reconciled his faith in the gospel with his tough-nosed play, including his willingness to engage in fights on the ice. Fighting in the NHL is often criticized as being an act of aggression, but Fisher sees it (as do I) as a way to protect one's teammates. The role of protector and defender is very compatible with a Christian view of masculinity, and I was glad to see Fisher debunk the all-too-common idea that Christians must be passive pushovers!It was also touching to read about Fisher's relationship with a young boy named Elgin-Alexander Fraser. I was well aware of Fisher's active role in community service and philanthropy -- including running the Mike Fisher Hockey Camp, serving as honorary board president of an organization for terminally ill children called Roger's House, and his involvement with Hockey Ministries International and the Make-a-Wish Foundation -- but did not know that he had cared so much about the children he worked with that he visited this very sick 3-year-old multiple times between games during the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs. When the boy died just as the Ottawa Senators advanced to the Finals (a lifelong dream for every hockey player), Fisher served as a pallbearer for the funeral.One thing I would like to have read that the book lacked was an account of some of Fisher's struggles with his faith. In interviews, he has mentioned that there were times in his career when hockey became almost an "idol" to him, and that he had to refocus and get his priorities straight. These are the types of struggles that are common to every Christian, and it would be very beneficial for young people to have the opportunity to see that their role models are also real people with real trials, and to observe how they persevere through these times of difficulty. This is sadly missing from his biography.Still, this is a great biography for kids, and particularly for those who are hockey fans. As a Christian and a Nashville Predators fan, I am immensely proud to have Mike Fisher on my team, and I look forward to many years of cheering for him both on and off the ice!Please note that 100% of all proceeds from the sale of Defender of Faith will go to World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Not a Jets or a Predators fan. That said, this is a good but unenthralling read for kids. When it comes to more than a very surface-level book, though, it's not particularly impressive. Against what exactly is Mike Fisher defending the faith? There's no major trial or attack on his faith mentioned anywhere in the book other than that hockey sometimes "almost became an idol", so I fail to see the merits of trumpeting oneself with an overblown title. That he's married to Carrie Underwood seems to be the main reason the media pays attention to him. Considering his reputation as a gritty, tough teammate-defending hockey player and a talented defensive forward, that's a pity.If there were actual examples in the book explaining why he struggled or with what, it might be more useful. As is, "This hockey player is a Christian" is about the full summary of the book. Given the work with various ministries and example set to teammates, I was hoping for a lot more from this book. It's readable at its target age, but not particularly encouraging because there's no particular struggle anywhere.I applaud Mike Fisher for his stand for Christ. Just wish that had come out in the book a lot more.

Enjoyed reading about Mike Fisher's hockey career. What a blessing his story is and an inspiration to Christians all over the world. I'm excited to see what God has in store for him in the future.

If you have a young sports fan in your life, this is a good choice. The author keeps the story moving and doesn't get bogged down in statistics. The character of Fish develops throughout his NHL experience, and he shines through the adversity and his successes.What surprised me about this book was the aspect of hockey that involves protecting your team and physical contact. Be prepared to read this book with your child and to discuss this issue of fighting to protect your community.You'll enjoy this book and appreciate how organic and real Mike's relationship with God is. Mike is a role model because he develops his abilities to the fullest and shows maturity and compassion when life gets rough.

Mike Fisher is a role model for everyone, not just athletes. This book gives you facts that you may not know about his life and faith in Jesus. The book goes in order of his life starting all the way back to his childhood to now living out his dream as an NHL player, and husband to country singer Carrie Underwood while still staying on track with his walk with God. This book is a great read for all ages! I love Mike Fisher so much more! What a Godly guy! :)

He's a Christian and proud of it. He's a true role model for young boys trying to make their way through the athletic ranks, dealing with foul-mouthed peers and coaches. He makes it clear he believes in a relationship with Jesus Christ rather than just being religious. It's more than just showing up at church once a week, its a 24/7 walk with the Lord. A great book for teens facing persecution for their beliefs. A good read. I bought it for my grandson, who also liked it and benefited from it.

Defender of Faith inspired me to continue to be a good Christian and keep a strong faith in God. It was a positive story. I purchased this book in hopes of gaining better insight into law school admissions and while I think it is a good starting place it isn’t information that is difficult to find elsewhere.I believe this book is geared towards people aiming for top 20 schools or maybe top 50. However, it has pointers for everyone.Note that it is frequently a plug for the authors business.Additionally it has a lot of information that comes off as very elitist and forgets that not everyone is aiming for really posh schools. So, if you’re aiming for a school whose 50th percentile is a 155 LSAT and a 3.25 GPA then this book is often going to feel like it is looking down on you.If you’re pretty well versed in what a school is looking for in an application but hoping for some new information then skip this book.It’s a great starting place if you aren’t sure where to begin. It’s also well organized if you want all the information in one place. This is a well-written and well-researched description of the economic problems ailing contemporary American agriculture, and of the deleterious effects mammoth-scale corporate farming is having on the environment. The author is an experienced investigative reporter and an unashamed proponent of sustainable agriculture and the ever-dwindling "family" farmer representative of traditional crop cultivation in the United States. As such, Diet For A Dead Planet is a bit of a polemic and firmly in the camp of other books critical of the relationship between agricultural economics and modern food production, such as Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation. Needless to say, Cargill and Archer-Daniels Midland executives are not going to be enamored of Diet, but any citizen concerned about the state of farming in the US, and its effects on public health and environmental well-being, would do well to read this book.Cook organizes his topic into three sections, dealing with food quality and safety; the business and economic aspects of modern agriculture; and environmental consequences of profligate pesticide use and "factory" farm effluents. Each section contains several chapters with extensive footnotes. The chapters are obviously targeted for a general audience, and as a consequence are very readable without overwhelming the reader with statistics and technical jargon. In particular, I found the chapters on the evolving history of American agriculture offered a concise but informative account of a complex and often tumultuous subject. Other chapters on such diverse subjects as the "mad cow" crisis, the continuous deposition of toxic pesticides in water supplies, and the travails of workers in high-throughput slaughterhouse operations, are all eye-opening to one degree or another.Cook ends the book with a admonition to the public: unless we actively choose to support organic / sustainable farm operations, our health and the welfare of the environment we live in are not going to improve. Rather than simple hectoring, however, in the last segment of the book he provides an extensive listing of whole-food organizations and advocacy groups dedicated to helping us change the way we eat and consume natural resources. There is of course an element of "better to light one candle" rhetoric here; even Cook is not so naïve as to think that tomorrow will see the US converted to any kind of enormous vegan commune. But his hope is that after reading Diet some of us will devote a bit of thought to the hows and whys of our eating habits, and in this, I think he is as realistic as any "muckraker" can be.

Whether he is taking on the exploitation of farm workers and poultry-plant employees; the take-over of large-scale agribusiness; farm subsidies, or an America swimming in pesticides and animal waste, Mr. Cook has clearly done his research. Extremely well documented, the book contains a number of startling statistics. Did you know that in California's Central Valley, the 1,600 dairies there generate more waste than a city of 21 million people? Did you know that in 1997, growers applied more than 985 million pounds of pesticides and herbicides to crops? Can you conceive of a farm subsidy system that has people like Scottie Pippin and Sam Donaldson receiving farm program monies?There is a lot to ponder in this book and some excellent ideas and suggestions as to what we as consumers can do to make changes in our lives and our communities to help bring farming back to the people and out of the hands of the giant corporations.

The author does such a good job of showing what utter rats agribusiness/chain grocery stores/pesticide companies are I have to give this a five star rating. Environmental damage, exploitive labor practices, factory farms, unhealthy and at times out and out toxic food supply, destruction of the family farms, the FDA/USDA being there more to see to it that big food gets what they want instead of protecting the public. All of this is covered in Diet for a Dead Planet. Even the farm subsidies, which the average American probably thinks goes to prop up family farms is more a welfare program for the super wealthy who get paid for land they own that they don't farm. David Rockefeller and Ted Turner, along with corporations like Chevron and Dupont rake in the dough from these programs, not to mention big agribusiness firms.Probably the only annoyance in this book is he treads politically correct waters when talking about the exploitive labor practices used on illegal (and legal) immigrants by agribusiness. Its also very Americentric. I am really grateful to live in a country that while it is far from perfect, has higher food standards and doesn't allow all this toxic stuff into the food supply like America does and about a third of the fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products on the shelves in Denmark are organic.

the best kosher cookbook ever published!

Great cookbook.

This is a cookbook with outstanding gourmet recipes for kosher meals. My cousin, who is a gourmet cook, had purchased it for me, when I asked her for the recipe for a great dish she cooked for us. After we had our house painted, it was misplaced. I could not find it in any bookstore. I should have known better, and contacted Amazon first. This was my first purchase from Amazon, and it came when it was promised and is as great as I remembered it to be.

This cookbook book is ellegantand the recipes I have used knock the socks offof my guests. Eventhough people say they are on a dieteveryone behaves like they have never tasted food before.If you only have this book it will get you through a lot!If I could give it a diamond award I would because its better than 5 stars!

I haven't made anything in this book that wasn't fabulous. It's a great modern day recipe book for Kosher cooking. We need more of these.

This is the first Gourmet Kosher Cookbook I have found. Every recipe is easy to follow and delicious.I do not keep Kosher but this is my favorite cookbook. Outstanding

The hard-copy versions look nice and all, but I wanted to know more about the Kindle edition. And I wasn't looking for reviews of the story. That's been the subject of glowing praise for decades. I got tired of trying to find a review that would answer the only question I had. Couldn't find one, so I finally broke down and BOUGHT the Kindle one-volume edition. And the answer is: Yes, the table of contents is all bundled together at the beginning, as opposed to having a separate T-o-C for each "volume" (stop sneering, I've seen other one-volume e-books where you have to skip through the whole first section to get to the table of contents for the second section). More importantly, the T-o-C actually works. That's right, I can go straight to any chapter by tapping that chapter on the T-o-C (again, other e-books had a static T-o-C where no amount of tapping would take me anywhere and I had to keep flipping pages to get to the chapter I wanted). Everything else seems to be functioning without problems. Dictionary, highlighting, synching between my Kindle and my phone, etc., all work perfectly. And in addition to being about half the cost of the three separate volumes, the one-volume edition helps to keep the scrolling at a minimum when searching through my library.

I bought it as a gift for my best friend, and the book is absolutely gorgeous! The cover has nice fabric-like texture, the pages are white and smooth, it has lots of illustrations. The book is big and heavy, so you won't be able to carry it around with you, it's designed for home reading. Can't recommend this edition enough: either as a gift or an addition to your library, it is a great buy.

I have never read the lord of the Rings before but I have watched the movies and played the games and I loved them. However I was always confused at what was going on at times but after reading the books everything makes so much sense now. I honestly liked the books more than the movies and although they are similar the books have way more content and details in them. So if you loved the movies I would 100% suggest getting the books.Speaking of the books I got the paperback version and they are beautiful. Although they are simple and the covers are one plain color per book it still has that sense of style and simplicity. They covers and case are thick and well made. Although their were points in the books where the words were slightly faded I still has no problem reading them.I'm not even going to talk about the story since just trust me when I say its one of the best series ever. I have never read or even considered reading a series twice but I honestly think that I might read this one a second time that's how much I liked it.So if you liked the movies and aren't sure about reading the books I would say go for it and get them since you wont be disappointed. If you never watched the movies then get both them and the books:)

Review for The Lord of the Rings.I'll keep it brief, this is not a review of the actual story but of this specific edition. I have attached many pictures that I hope help you decide if this is an edition you want to buy.Pros:- The font is big and easy to read.- 65 beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee that bring the story to life.Cons:- Slipcover is an opaque plastic, whit a modern look that I think doesn't complement the book.- One or two blank pages before and/or after each illustration.Overall I think this is a great edition and it's worth buying.

I am beyond disappointed. The font is too small to read, but I thought the artwork would make up for this since I already own editions with larger font. So many beautiful pieces of art were uploaded! Where can I find this edition? I just wasted $27. None of this artwork is found in the paperback edition. Is it found in the $90 hardback edition? I’m debating if I should just send this back since I can’t even read it 😭 These books are tiny!

For some people it doesn't matter, but for me, when I bought a serie of 4 books, the covers have to be the same, but here, I have two different cover, ugly, and two others who respect the esthetic of the movies. It's supposed to be a gift, I'm very upset.

What can you say about a classic? I'd never read these books all the way through before, and was determined to try, despite remembering what I had read as being tedious and somewhat purple-prose-ish. I apparently remembered wrong - coming back as an adult, these are beautiful books, very well-written and of course true epic fantasy. It may be that my tastes have changed, or just that I've matured, but these will definitely be reread many times.My only issue is that with the Kindle version, the footnotes seemed to be messed up. Many of them only bring up a page number (with no link), which may be how it was in the original books, but others seem to apply to footnotes further down the page, or just not at all to the thing they're noted from. Frustrating.

This (semi)autobiographical book was written in the mid fifties. It deserves to be plucked from obscurity and placed among the better novels of the 20th century. Artful prose tells the story of a boy growing up in colonial Tunis. He is at the crossroads of Jewish, French, African and Moslem/Arab culture. He is unable to assimilate all these influences into his life, so he rejects his background and is left with a void he cannot fill. Highly recommended.

This is a well-written novel about the life of a Jewish Tunisian boy, growing up in the years leading up to WW2. It is generally considered to be autobiographical, and though the narrator’s name is not the author’s, it reads more like a memoir than a novel: it records Alexandre’s memories and thoughts about his life, but has few if any traditional scenes and very little dialogue or physical description; the detail is primarily emotional. And yet, the specific incidents that make up the narrator’s experiences feel drawn from life, rather than the types of occurrences an author is likely to invent.The first section of the novel is about Alexandre’s childhood, and it begins in almost idyllic fashion, though it gains complexity as he becomes aware of his family’s poverty and the divisions in his society. The second and longest section follows him through high school, torn between the traditional lifestyle of his family (who come to resent allowing him to study at all, since it means not bringing in money) and the European middle class. This part of the book reminded me of Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels in its examination of social class, through the lens of an impoverished student trying to succeed in an almost foreign world. The final section is about WW2 and the German occupation, and while this is by no means a thriller, it introduces some suspense and is a different sort of war story than I’d read before.At any rate, I enjoyed this book: it is well-written (or well-translated), and the narrator is complex and feels genuine. While there’s no single plot, the story kept my interest, and formed a great introduction to the complexities of a place I knew next to nothing about. The supporting characters receive less development, and there are more of them than we could get to know well – again, in memoir-like fashion – but in a story focused on the narrator’s search for identity, it works. I would recommend this one.

I was looking forward to reading this because I am going to Tunisia and I love literature, especially if it's challenging literature. But instead of being challenging, I found this narrative quite tedious and eventually annoying. It reads is almost like a Woody Allen parody of an existential memoir. Memmi is totally self-absorbed and alienated almost from birth. As a kid he is alienated from his parents, from other kids, from his culture--enough already. Remember the scene of the young Woody/Alvy going to a psychiatrist in "Annie Hall"? I swear it's young Memmi:Alvy's mother: He's been depressed. All of a sudden, he can't do anything.Doctor: Why are you depressed, Alvy?Alvy's mother: Tell Dr. Flicker. (To the doctor) It's something he read.Doctor: Something he read, huh?Alvy: The universe is expanding...Well, the universe is everything, and if it's expanding, some day it will break apart and that will be the end of everything.Alvy's mother: What is that your business? (To the doctor) He stopped doing his homework.Alvy: What's the point?

Why beat about the bush? I loved this book. I'm no scientist. I'm no mathematician. What I am is a historian and a novelist, which means I have a lively curiosity about a lot of things, the prerequisite for writing about anything. Edward Dolnick is a historian and his gig is the history of science. He also has that lively curiosity required of folks who think and put fingers to keyboards. For those of us of not scientifically gifted, we require someone, in this case Dolnick, to explain his subject. In this he excels. In The Clockwork Universe,the result is a highly readable book about how our modern age came to be. He builds his case well. Here's one example: In the Middle Ages, the big question was "Why?", as in why does this happen - the earth's rotation, etc., you name it. The answer was generally theological in nature - God did it, therefore, and so on, end of argument. As others, often risking church condemnation, took bold steps beyond, the question became "How?" This leap seems simple, but it is not. To his credit, Dolnick leads his readers along, and we make our own discoveries. I've given away many copies of this book to friends. I haven't quite started giving it away to random strangers yet, but it's good enough to be handed out on street corners. I learned a lot, and even more important, I thought a lot. Thank you, Edward Dolnick, for explaining unexplainable minds, like Sir Isaac Newton's, and Gottfried Leibniz's and others.

The author does a wonderful job bringing us to the 17th century and into the minds of the greatest scientists to ever have lived!Being a Christian, it was refreshing to discover the great faith of these men, and how their confidence that God was a mathematician drove them to find the keys of the natural world.I commend the author, as it is clear he is not of the same persuasion about God as Newton and the others, yet still manages to present them in a fairly unbiased manner, though on occasion his disagreement did leak through. Probably the most disappointing argument he gave against the scientists of the 1600's view that God was a mathematician was as follows:"The scientists of the 1600s felt that they had come to their view of God by way of argument and observation. But they were hardly a skeptical jury, and their argument, which seemed so compelling to its original audience, sounds like special pleading today. Galileo, Newton, Leibniz, and their peers leaped to the conclusion that God was a mathematician largely because they were mathematicians—the aspects of the world that intrigued them were those that could be captured in mathematics."To me it seems very unjustified to accuse the fathers of "leaping" to the conclusion of God as a mathematician simply because they were mathematicians. To the contrary, an expert in a particular field would be the best person to recognize another expert in that field. A Bobby Fischer would most assuredly be able to discern if one were a grandmaster or not in the field of chess.In like manner, the scientists saw God as a great mathematician because they saw the evidence of his great skills expressed in the universe, not because they were mathematicians.This is an excellent book, and I do highly recommmed it for all interested in the history of these great scientists, and what life was like in the 1600s.

The author sets the scene in the mid seventeenth century England where superstitions, death and destruction dominate the day. The western world was still very much defined by mythical forces of good and evil.For fifteen hundred years, since the classical Greeks discovered math and pondered form, purpose, symmetry and function, science was rather stagnant until the early sixteenth century when Copernicus posed that we’re not the center of our universe. A few decades later, Galileo discovered physics and established the rules for observational science.In the seventeenth century, Newton and his contemporaries took Galileo’s ideas and built a whole new system of scientific method. New optical devices opened up whole worlds of observation in both the “heavens” and the microscopic. Newton’s calculus changed the way we understood motion, change and planetary movement, which lead to his masterpiece The Principia and his famous scientific laws.The author portrays the competitiveness of these geniuses who both shared and sheltered their discoveries and data. Rivalry fueled much of the big breakthroughs in the period and the author does a good job describing the lively relationships. But the giant of the period was by far Newton and everyone knew it at the time. He was an extraordinary thinker who brought insight about much of the workings of the natural universe.Overall, a truly terrific book!

I picked up “The Clockwork Universe” expecting a biography of Isaac Newton and was delighted to discover a window into the late seventeenth century. This is not just the story of Newton, but of the intellectual climate of his times. This is not a boring book, but a fast-paced, interesting, readable and accessible narrative about Newton, Euclid, Halley, Hooke, Galileo, Leibniz and others. There is some science and math here, but only as much as necessary, and very clearly explained for the general reader. The language is not complex and non-academic, suitable for anyone with a high school education. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the beginnings of modern science and the modern world.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful classic story and it gets 5 stars. This particular printing, however, is completely unacceptable. It's as if someone typed it into a document, and printed it off--no page numbers, not titled at the top of each page, the lines don't even break properly (see photo). Purchased as a gift, thankfully with enough time to purchase a better quality copy--probably for less money! A disgrace to the publishing community.

I LOVED Anne of Green Gables as a child and own the complete hard copy of the Anne series. Initially, I was delighted to find this collection of books written by one of my all time favorite authors for only $0.99 (kindle price. What a steal!) and felt I had to get the digital copy for my kindle at once. As soon as the product was delivered to my device, I began to read it since it's been years since I've visited the darling world that L.M Montgomery created.I was very surprised to find that I kept tripping on certain sentences; the writing didn't seem as smooth as I remembered. When I got to chapter 6, I decided to compare a sentence in the digital print to my old, yellowing physical copy of Anne of Green Gables book. I realized why I had some difficulty reading my new digital copy: THERE ARE TYPOS IN THIS PRODUCT.It contains the WORST kinds of typos. There are typos in which it results in sentences that don't make sense. There are typos with the wrong pronouns in them that make it confusing for the reader to understand which character the publisher meant to write about. I am able to follow the story because I've read Anne of Green Gables more than once with my hard copy but for new readers, these typos will make this beautiful story difficult to read and at times, understand.I hope the digital copy can be fixed so that owners can enjoy L.M. Montgomery's work as it was meant to be enjoyed. I have given this two stars instead of one because of the fabulous price for kindle readers.

BUYER BEWARE! The version published by "CreateSpace" is slapdash print-on-demand garbage. I hoped an illustrated version would be good for a child, but I returned it on first inspection. Nowhere could I find evidence of thought or effort in layout to justify any price. Illustrations are small, extremely infrequent, and essentially worthless. Some shameless soul has simply taken LM Montgomery's text, which, as it is in the public domain, is freely available to anyone, and tried to make money selling it. Interested readers would be advised to download a free ebook or pay for a handsomer edition, such as the Puffin In Bloom version. We went with the Puffin in Bloom version and are much more satisfied.

This is a great book, but buying this edition which Marco Pedulla purports to have translated constitutes buying stolen property.The book was written in Englilsh, so Pedulla has translated nothing. What he has done has taken material free in the public domain and offered it on Amazon.Amazon should NOT support theft.

The illustrations are actually random pictures that are creepy since they are in the beginning when Anne meets Mathew Cuthbert so they insinuate a romance between them. And the free audiobook is click bait to set you up to download an app and give your email address to spammers. Screen shots of the "illustrations" below.

This review is of the kindle version of Anne: The Green Gables Complete Collection and does not reflect on the L.M. Montgomery text. The Anne books have always been favorites of mine. Buy the book, but get another edition! First issue: Really random pics grabbed from some art history textbook do not qualify as illustrations. They are more distracting than I would have imagined. Why didn't they leave the totally unrelated images out? Second issue: This is some new definition of complete that I am unacquainted with. This is Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea only. None of the later books are included. False advertising. A text I am being pulled out of by unnecessary distractions. There have to be better options. I am going in search of one.
