Review

“There are so many tantalizing details to tickle readers' fancies, from the chest-hairy end papers to all the visual in-jokes tucked into these panels… With such a wide range of characters, it’s no wonder that Luce’s stories have also found a diverse readership that includes rock ‘n’ roll dudes, women, and kitty lovers. ... Share it with friends and gift yourself: this graphic novel is the best treat anyone can get, short of a basket of kittens!” - Cathy Camper, Lambda Literary“But while Luce’s aesthetic and storytelling impress, it’s Wuvable Oaf’s story that’s endearing. ... The ups and downs and humorous pratfalls that plague Oaf are all things that anyone―regardless of gender or orientation―who has been in a romantic relationship can empathize with. Luce goes small so that his book can go big. The awkwardness, the tenderness, the eroticism, it all comes from a truthful place, a recognizable place, and it’s what makes the series both as funny as it is and as touching.” - Shea Hennum, Paste“Few comics have titles as accurate as Ed Luce’s Wuvable Oaf. ... Collecting a project like this is Fantagraphics’ bread and butter, and Wuvable Oaf is definitely a book you’ll want to eat up.” - Steve Foxe, Paste“Now collected into a very funny book by Fantagraphics, the tentative-yet-sexy romance between gigantic Oaf and tiny Eiffel will be catnip to bear-lovers and the bears who love them―but also to readers not steeped in the queer scene who simply love a witty, warm-hearted story and a lead character who’s worth rooting for.” - Dan Kois, Slate“Like that of Tales of the City, the queer San Francisco of Wuvable Oaf is a community you wish existed, full of the kind of people you wish you knew. ... Though Luce’s cleanly designed illustrations appear almost entirely in black and white here, they exude a welcoming warmth, thanks in part to the book’s contagious love for its cast of characters. ... A person who is not delighted by Wuvable Oaf is probably not a person.” - Jacob Brogan, Slate“...[T]he delightful Wuvable Oaf [is] a heartwarming, hilarious, occasionally raunchy exploration of San Francisco gay life and the city’s queer underground music scene. ... With a juvenile, slightly oblivious lead, heightened ex-related drama, and strong ties to an urban music scene, Wuvable Oaf is like a gayer, hairier, filthier take on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels...” - Oliver Sava, The A.V. Club“Luce's writing is as endearing as his protagonist, sweet and humble, well-intentioned and genuine. ... As a protagonist, Oaf comprises the perfect portions of sweetness, shyness, and nervousness to endear and make him relatable to any and all readers who have ever had a crush or fallen in love. ... Gay or straight, there's much to wuv about Wuvable Oaf.” - Zach Hollwedel, Under the Radar“The book is formally inventive and heartfelt, reading like a mid-century romance comic steeped in the lewd sexual fantasies of classic underground comix. But the most admirable aspect is the indelible characterization of Oaf himself, a bear you’ll never forget.” - Abraham Riesman, Vulture“This story of a burly ex-wrestler/kitten fancier has been one of my absolute favorite comics ― an affectingly offbeat gay rom-com that captures the universal sadness and silliness of loneliness and love, and mixes heartbreak and humor in exactly the right proportions.” - Patrick Reed, ComicsAlliance“Wuvable Oaf is one of the cutest, most charming underground comics you can read. It also contains many man-nipples. ... All these tiny stories quickly reveal a rich, charming gallery of characters.” - Oystein Runde, Empirix

Excellent. So glad I got this. Haven't enjoyed an independent comic this much in years. Unlike anything I've read before but at the same time, completely relatable. Great art, good characters, it's just fun. Left me wanting more. Mr. Luce is going to be a big name in comics very soon. One small thing. The description says there are pages "in color". Well, there are some pages with color on some objects that add accent to the story, like pink in one story, red in another. But those pages are not in full color. It's more like some pages WITH color instead of pages IN color. That's the description's fault, not the book's.

Ed Luce is a god among men. His artistic and characterization skills are unique and top notch. Gay or straight, if you are a lover of comics, characters, and subtle pop-culture allusion, then the Oaf is for you. Stop reading my gibberish and buy this book. Buy them all.

Got this and a few other great graphic novels/comics for my brother for his 40th birthday. He loved them all. Case closed.

I love off beat comics. This one had me snickering at the '90's references and quirky off beat humor. At core is a romance with a large "slice of life" thrown on top. I hope there is another Oaf book in the future.

I love how Ed Luce drives home his own style, outlook, gut feelings and what excites him on the page with this wonderful character. Its an honest book that I can relate to, but also rock out with. If your open minded and like revealing imagery with wrestling themes, please take this ride. Support this book and escape sooner than later.

It was very different than I was expecting. If I were more into wrestling then it might have been for me.

A magical collection of Wuvable stuff!!! I especially loved the young oaf segment!!!

Awesome!

Review

"Giménez Smith's poems in Cruel Futures continue the work of truth telling that she established in her previous collections. She reminds us that our cruel pasts will lead to cruel futures, that the garbage we’ve consumed from television and the non-stop media cycle will color and pollute our perceptions. But in looking unflinchingly at the broken remains of the public and the personal, she also assures us that there is something to be built from the rubble. Whether she is speaking as the quick-witted badass who has 'a machete and a hot head' or the thoughtful 'friend who has walked / alongside your life without judgment,' you want her in your corner."—Boston Review "Giménez Smith seeks release from the pressures of societal expectations in this collection of brief yet powerful poems. She depicts the myriad ways that a woman’s sense of self is at the mercy of assigned gender roles. … She links the concept of becoming a ‘monster' to women’s defiance of prescribed roles, their need to break out of which makes them dangerous … Cultural phenomena such as marriage and television come under scrutiny, and she handles mental illness issues with great care, particularly bipolar disorder and dementia. Giménez Smith’s crisp lyrics and imagery highlight ever-present threats to female personhood and autonomy."—Publishers Weekly "In Carmen Giménez Smith’s Cruel Futures, it’s clear she is not interested in the kind of static attention one associates with William Wordsworth’s definition of poetry as 'emotion recollected in tranquillity.' Instead Giménez Smith has places to go and then to take off from again, in the form, mainly, of social and political critiques. Although her poems achieve a certain velocity, she still manages to delve into volcanic meaning and bask in the mirror of self-reflection. To truly relish her talent is to understand her intellect as one of those plasma balls that lights up with bolts of electricity when one’s hand touches it. The speakers in her poems are charming, self-deprecating, humorous, and awed, especially when they portray what life is like as a mother, a wife, an artist, and a consumer of popular culture and literature. Because Giménez Smith experiments with a thicker set of references and inferential imagery than most, poems such as 'Of Property,' 'As Body,' and 'Ravers Having Babies' seem to outpace whatever triggered their origin, and she almost always arrives at pure lyric possession.”—Major Jackson, American Poets "Cruel Futures is irresistible in its candid, spicy, ceaselessly surprising, totally unashamed self- shaming. 'I want no window into me, not even pores,' she writes, but her poetry is loud with flung-open shutters and windows. … Giménez Smith is so spirited that she would be anybody's hero excepting perhaps her more assimilated children, whose doubts of her she writes about with hilarious honesty. She is at once vulnerable and fearless, full of fun, a headlong, natural performer. Exaggeration is her muse. The writing could equally be described as poetry and cut-up scrappy prose; but it escapes the low pressure and general disesteem of the latter through panicky pacing, an edgy breathlessness that remembers terrors and hurts. … The disregard of gracefulness, the knocking roughness here as throughout, agrees with the no-bullshit temper of the times. I find that it is itself a tricky form of grace, of elegance and poise. Everything Giménez Smith writes compels attention …"—Lana Turner “[I]t’s Smith’s control of the line, the lyric, her use of compression, wry humor, and pointed candor that makes the book’s captivation one that truly endures. She delves into familial issues: child-rearing, sick or aging parents, and mental health with care and magnanimous transparency. Cruel Futures is an insurmountable labor that Smith has carved from a world of grief, but retains love and humor that renders her devotion a masterpiece.”—The Arkansas International “[Giménez Smith’s] new collection that explores the intersections of her various identities and the contrasts between the roles she plays and has played at stages in her life. These poems are rooted in the daily details of her life, and hold a tangible immediacy and frankness that departs from the abstractions of her 2013 collection Milk & Filth. … There is tremendous power in Cruel Futures, a collection both supple in its vulnerabilities and firm in its defenses. Carmen Giménez Smith has survived her own story, and she has ensured her children have survived their own thus far. The book’s tension comes from her awareness that her power to continue to ensure that survival is evaporating from her hands, reconstituting in their own.”—David Nilsen, The Bind "Media distortion, mental illness, trauma, and oppression are among the fixations of this splendid, fierce, and essential new book by Carmen Giménez Smith, who shrewdly documents a woman's passage into and through these crucibles. … Giménez Smith’s self-inquiry drills down relentlessly until it reaches central, molten truths."—Marietta Brill, The Adirondack Review Cruel Futures is an astonishingly present imagistic exploration of aging, familial bonds, and mothering in the context of late capitalism. Giménez Smith’s poems, sparkling with pop culture and gleaming with intelligence, unpretentiously welcome the reader into mortality, grief, and nurturing, while deftly highlighting how these human conditions are shaped by the race, gender, and class of those who experience them."—Luiza Flynn-Goodlett, The Adroit Journal "Cruel Futures is kinder than its title suggests, and steely. … I am so ready to go over this with a teenage relative who is half-Irish, one-quarter-Chinese, one-quarter-Filipina and so much more fabulous than she thinks, despite encouragement from loved ones and teachers. It goes without saying, though sometimes Giménez Smith thinks she has to, that this poem, this writer, this girl are all deeply American. This is vital language for our time."—The Rumpus

I received a pdf version of this book for free on LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.I had just read another book by this same author. As I had just given the other book a one star review, I was not expecting a whole lot for this book. While this book was better in some ways, I was still disappointed by the quality of a book that is aimed at teaching small children about zoo animals. In addition to a misspelled word in the “About the Author” section, there are a lot of little things that detract from the book. There are some pages that continue the topic of the previous page, but they just have text, no pictures. This makes the format a little more boring. There are a couple of pictures in the PDF where the pictures do not display properly. Portions of the animals have blocks of color over areas instead of the proper shape of the animal.I especially have a problem with the information about snakes. Snakes are not poisonous, they are venomous. While this is common misinformation, a book that is supposed to teach children real facts about animals should at least be sure that all the facts are correct. Also, the way in which snakes are talked about can lead to unhealthy fear about snakes, even harmless ones. It is mentioned that there are harmless and helpful snakes, but does not say anything about how they are helpful. The information focuses on the features of dangerous snakes. There is mention of snakes that can be deadly, but there is no mention that there is anti-venom that is available for many of such snakes, especially for the dangerous snakes that are wild in the U.S. This is the type of presentation that reinforced my unhealthy fear of all snakes since I was a child. Had I been taught the difference between “good” and “bad” snakes and how the “good” snakes can be helpful and harmless, it would have helped me to react to snakes better as a child, as well as an adult. There is specific information that is shared about the animals that may be interesting to older readers but seems a little complex for the ages that the rest of the writing seems to be targeting. It leaves confusion about what target ages this book is really for. There is a section at the end titled “Quiz Answers”, which seems an awkward title as there is no separate “Quiz” section, just a list of all the questions and answers. The questions and answers to some of the questions refer to some of the complex information just mentioned. Again, this introduces confusion about the target ages. While wanting to teach children information about different zoo animals is wonderful, there are too many detractors in this book that can take away from that goal. I recommend looking elsewhere on information about zoo animals.

This book does have pictures or graphics of animals, funny pictures. It also has plenty of information for the learning minds. Along with each picture is plenty of information for children from ages of about 4-15 depending on what they want to learn. These are general facts about animals that live in zoos. I know plenty of kids that know about animals but have never been to a zoo and do not really understand what they entail. This is a great book especially if you are planning your first trip to a zoo or just want that little bit of extra information you would otherwise not know!

I was given the chance to review this book early. My opinion is that, although it looks better than the other book of the writer 'Bears for Kids: Amazing Pictures and Fun Fact Children Book', it still isn't very good. The pictures used in the book are cartoons - which is an improvement in my opinion regarding the so-so photographs of Bears for Kids - but still fail to look intersting. The pictures seem to fit better in a worksheet about animals rather than a book claiming to have amazing pictures. Also, the pictures lack pattern, which gives the impression that they were not prepared specifically for the book, but were taken from elsewhere sources. The topic division is much more precise - again, comparing to the other book - as there are at least a few pages on each chapter which are somewhat informative. To conclude: my opinion that the books were put together in a very short while without much effort continues. The book may have simple and rather interestingly put facts but is not fit to be a children's book as it isn't visiually intriguing for them.

This book goes into great deal explaining the many types of animals that can be found at the zoo. It includes several pictures of these animals so that the reader can easily associate the description of the animals with what they actually look like.

Nice little book with very pretty pictures. Easy to read and understand. A great book for a child who wants to know more about animals.

This may not be the 'National Geographic' book on Zoo Animals, but it is a great starter book for young children.I give this book **** as it is a cute and informative way to teach children about animals in the zoo.I was given an advanced copy, so some of the photos were not all crisp..something I hope had been fixed in the released edition. Also, there were tow quiz question that could be very confusing, and cause a child to become frustrated.Overall, I thinks this book...with some improvements, is a fascinating book that parents will have to read to younger children, as some words are quite advanced for a younger child to pronounce or understand..although the author does clarify what the larger words mean.
